Jye McNeil made it three wins from the first four races at Caulfield on Saturday, guiding Sebonack to a comfortable win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m).

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained two-year-old colt was on debut in the Group 3 feature, but that didn’t stop punters rallying behind him, as he firmed from $6 into $5.50.

The son of Capitalist was a $260,000 yearling purchase at the 2021 Inglis Easter Yearling Sales, and he quickly recouped some of that, taking home the $120,000 winner’s cheque.

After jumping well from barrier two, McNeil had to guide the debutant through the field and set out after the favourite Renosu in the straight, but he ultimately did it with ease, winning by 1.25 lengths on the line.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told Racing.com that the win was good benchmark for his stable, suggesting that they may have an even better two-year-old waiting at home in the stables.

“It was good to get that one out of the road – now I know where the rest of them sit,” the trainer said.

“We’ve got a few lined up over the next couple of weeks, so I’m happy.”

Although the debutant looked to be the complete package on Saturday, Wayne Hawkes says that they won’t rush him to get to the Blue Diamond Stakes, with one more run potentially required before February 26.

“He did everything right,” Hawkes said.

“I got here today and handled himself beautifully well.

“You never quite know with them when they’re at they come to race day, but he paraded so well – I was impressed by the way he paraded.
“Every week there’s a good horse now gonna come up out and win a good two-year-old race.

“Next week we’ve got the Blue Diamond Preludes, so we’ll be talking up something else next week.

“Just want to go home and see how he pulls up.

“It was a great effort.”

The colt is now on the second line of betting for the Blue Diamond, with online bookmakers winding him into $7 on the back of Saturday’s win.
