The Schillaci Stakes is a 1100m Group 2 event held at Caulfield Racecourse.
Initial runnings of the Schillaci Stakes were over 1200m but from 1988 to 2014 it was 1000m, and from 2014 it has been run at 1100m.
The Schillaci Stakes was named after one of the great sprinters of the modern era. Schillaci won the Victorian sprint triple crown at just his fourth, fifth and sixth starts. Schillaci would win eight Group 1s in his career.

- Bellatrix Star ($6) claimed a hat-trick of wins in her preparation, following another strong victory at Caulfield in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes. Mark Walker and Craig Williams combined with the three-year-old filly, who got into the 1100m contest with only 51kg on her back, and that light weight told late as she sprinted past her rivals to claim another impressive victory. As expected, the speed was hot in the Schillaci, with Recommendation ($3.80), Celui ($61) and Star Patrol ($8.50) running the race three-abreast throughout, while Mornington Glory ($6) and Oscar’s Fortune ($4.80) settled in behind and waited for gaps to appear. Damian Lane pushed Oscar’s Fortune through a gap at the 200m mark and took over with 150m to go; however, the eventual winner was finishing stronger on the outside, and Bellatrix Star took over in the final 50m to run away with her second Group 2 success of her short career.
- The Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield appeared to be a match race between Asfoora ($2.10) and Uncommon James ($2.40); however, the Henry Dwyer-trained mare had her nearest rival in the market well beaten by the 200m mark as she ran away with a dominant victory. Many speed map experts had the top two chances settling near the speed, but it would have surprised most when the two favourites cleared out and led the third horse by a good three lengths for most of the 1100m journey. Damian Lane clearly had a plan to pester Mitchell Aitken’s mare, as he raced on the outside of the leader, but it appeared that Uncommon James slightly overraced with the blinkers on and didn’t give himself the best chance as they turned the home bend. As soon as Asfoora straightened for home, you could see that Aitken still had a strong hold of his mare, while Lane was asking the runner-up for an effort, so when Aitken pushed the button Asfoora booted two lengths clear and put the race to bed within three or four strides.
- Paulele, the high-class Godolphin sprinter, secured a significant victory by claiming the $300,000 Group 2 2022 Schillaci Stakes (1100m). In a masterfully executed performance, jockey James McDonald guided Paulele with supreme confidence. Positioned a few lengths behind three eager leaders, Paulele showcased his prowess and only needed a bit of luck in the closing stages to emerge victorious. Despite facing an unusual challenge when accidentally struck across the head by Damien Oliver’s whip aboard Zoustyle, the well-supported $2.15 favourite demonstrated resilience and proved too formidable for his rapidly closing stable companion, Ingratiating.
- The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Savatoxl added the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes to an already impressive record. The natural front-runner was forced to do the chasing in the Schillaci Stakes when Dosh took up the running. The win was Savatoxl’s first success since claiming The Goodwood (1200m) during the Adelaide Autumn Carnival. Having needed to make up three-lengths with 100m to go, Luke Currie managed to lift Savatoxl to victory in a photo finish, with just a long neck separating the trifecta across the line.
- Despite The Everest not being an option for the Hawkes team, Dirty Work should all of his class when rounding up his rivals in the Schillaci Stakes. Despite being towards the rear of the field on the home turn, when William Pike asked for an effort, the $4.20 second elect unleashed a blistering turn of speed to nab race favourite Diamond Effort on the winning post, with Octane not far behind the pair in third.
- Having been beaten under two lengths by Nature Strip in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m), Trekking justified his favourite tag when claiming the Schillaci Stakes. Despite not looking likely early on, Trekking overpowered Ball Of Muscle and The Bostonian in impressive fashion after receiving a peach of a ride from Kerrin McEvoy.
