What Eagle Farm Races
Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, February 17, 2024
First Race 12:47pm AEST

Racing returns to Eagle Farm this Saturday afternoon as the Brisbane Racing Club hosts a very competitive nine-race program. The track was rated a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, but with more rain forecast for Thursday and Friday, don’t expect the track to improve much. The rail will be in the +5m position for the entire circuit, with racing scheduled to kick off at 12:47pm AEST.

Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Castillian

After a short stay in New South Wales with Joseph Pride, Castillian has been transferred to Tony Gollan in Queensland. The four-year-old gelding’s last two starts have been good without winning, as he finished third over 1400m two runs back and then wound up second over 1600m at Randwick on January 27. Gollan and his team have chosen to drop this son of Per Incanto back in distance to 1400m for his first run for the stable, as he appeared to struggle at the end of the mile. Ryan Maloney should give Castillian the run of the race from barrier one, and he will just need some luck in the final 400m.

Best Bet

Race 8 – silks#8 Castillian (1)

Next Best at Eagle Farm: Captain Fenkel

Captain Fenkel was a dominant winner over 1400m at this track on February 3, leading from start to finish as he defeated Jealous by 2.3 lengths. After recording impressive back-to-back wins, the three-year-old has earned a crack at 1600m in what could be the final run of his first preparation. This son of Kermadec should appreciate the softer ground as well as the rise in trip after running through the line strongly in his previous two victories. James Orman will have to cross the field from barrier 10 to find the front or settle outside the leader, but if he can do it without spending too much energy, Captain Fenkel can bring up the hat-trick on Saturday.

Next Best

Race 7 – Silks#1 Captain Fenkel (10)

3yo Gelding | T: Marcus Wilson | J: James Orman (58kg)

Best Value at Eagle Farm: Chernak

Chris Waller and James Orman will combine with Chernak as the six-year-old gelding looks to maintain his good track-and-trip record (4:2-1-0). Last weekend, this son of Dariyan made solid ground along the inside rail in the final 400m to finish fourth behind Caboche over 2000m at Doomben. It is rare that Waller will back up his runners off a seven-day break, so it appears this guy is ready to peak third-up. Although he has drawn barrier 10, Orman will settle Chernak towards the rear of the field and save him up for a strong finish.

Best Value

Race 3 – silks#3 Chernak (10)

6yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James Orman (59kg)

+1000 with Dabble
