Doomben preview

What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, August 19, 2023
First Race 11:43am AEST

Doomben Racecourse will play host to a very competitive nine-race card this Saturday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with no rain on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to be racing on a perfect Good 4 surface from the beginning of the program. The rail will be in the +0.5m position for the entire circuit, with the opening event set to jump at 11:43am AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben: Acres Away

Acres Away maintained his unbeaten record this preparation when saluting over 1200m at Eagle Farm on August 5. This Tom Smith-trained galloper is compiling a very nice career record, with four wins and a placing from five starts to date. Last start, this son of Top Echelon settled towards the back of the field before weaving his way through traffic on the home turn to run away with an impressive half-length victory. Stepping up in distance to 1350m and gaining the services of James Orman should only be seen as positives, and if he runs up to his form of late, we should see Acres Away win again.

Best Bet

Race 3 – #1 Acres Away (8)

Next Best at Doomben: Heleva Deel

The Mark Currie-trained Heleva Deel has been working up to a win at her first two starts this campaign, finishing third over 1100m at Toowoomba and second over 1400m at Eagle Farm. The six-year-old mare has been finishing off her races nicely, running on from worse than midfield to finish less than a length off the winner at both starts. This daughter of Dundeel now steps up to 1600m, where she has two wins and three placings from nine attempts. With the aid of Bailey Wheeler’s 3kg claim and nice barrier (4), Heleva Deel should be able to settle a lot closer to the speed and finally breakthrough for a much-deserved win.

Next Best

Race 4 – #5 Heleva Deel (4)

6yo Mare | T: Mark Currie | J: Bailey Wheeler (a3) (54kg)

Best Value at Doomben: Lasting Kiss

After running well in open company last start, Lasting Kiss from the Stephen Lee yard will be looking to return to the winner’s circle this weekend. The six-year-old mare loves racing on speed, but so far this preparation she has been made to settle mid-field or worse and has been running on. With only a few speed influences in this race, expect Angela Jones to push forward and settle outside the likely leader, Stampe. With this daughter of Real Impact hitting peak fitness fourth-up and only carrying 52.5kg, we should see Jones up the tempo from the 600m mark and give the rest of the field something to chase.

Best Value

Race 8 – #13 Lasting Kiss (10)

6yo Mare | T: Stephen Lee | J: Angela Jones (52.5kg)
