What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, November 5, 2022
First Race 1:08pm AEDT

We head to Doomben in sunny Queensland this weekend for a competitive nine-race metropolitan program. The rail is out 5.5m for the entire circuit, and with nothing but clear weather forecast, we’ll be racing on a Good 4 surface. Let’s see if we can find some winners on what looks a difficult card on paper. The first race is set to get underway at 1:08pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Chrysaor

We don’t have to wait long at all for our best of the day as it comes in race one on the card. Chrysaor is a two-year-old colt out of the Chris Waller yard and will be looking to break his maiden on debut in this 1110m contest against his age group. While he obviously lacks race experience, so does most of this field with several of the market-favoured runners coming from the trials to the track. This colt by Better Than Ready looked to have trialled impressively at Beaudesert on October 11, leading throughout to take it out by 0.8 lengths. The Waller team has put him away since, and this looks to have been the target a long way out. James Orman gets the booking and will look to lead and get his rivals chasing a long way from home, but we think Chrysaor will prove too strong.

Next Best: Bulloo

We tipped Bulloo last weekend, and although she was scratched due to unsuitable conditions, we’re happy to back up yet again with this mare by Written Tycoon. Stuart Kendrick is clearly looking for dry ground to kick off her campaign this preparation and should get exact that this weekend at Doomben. With a terrific trial under her belt and a great first-up strike rate of three starts for two wins, Bulloo looks set to run a bold race over the 1200m. Her form references last preparation behind horses like Ranch Hand on May 14 and Minsk Moment on April 30 at Eagle Farm have her set to be much better than the BM70 company she finds on Saturday. Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s claim of the 1.5kg will be much appreciated as he looks to get on the leader’s back from gate two before motoring past them to score well.

Best Value: Moktaffy

We look to the first leg of the quaddie for our best each-way play of the afternoon with the Chris Waller-trained Moktaffy. After a month let-up, this gelding by Lope De Vega steps back to the mile after running behind So Dapper over 1800m at Eagle Farm last time out on October 1. He was only beaten by 2.4 lengths that day and was in a much tougher BM75 race than what he finds on Saturday. This Class 3 contest over the 1630m looks a much more winnable task for Moktaffy, and with a very manageable 57.5kg in the saddle, he looks well placed to make it career win number three provided James Orman can find a midfield sit with some cover. He’s been beaten favourite his last two starts, so at close to double-figure odds with top online bookmakers he’s got to be a bet here.

Race 6 – #3 Moktaffy (4)
