The Western Australian Turf Club will host their first Saturday metropolitan meeting for the winter at Belmont Racecourse, as we move from the Ascot Racecourse after it hosted most of the Saturday meetings over the summer and autumn. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, and with a small amount of rain forecast for Saturday, we should stay in the Soft range for the entire nine-race program. The rail will be in the True position for the entire circuit for the first Saturday meeting back at Belmont.
The action out of Belmont will kick off at 12:04pm AWST.
Belmont Sprint Tip: Dom To Shoot
The highlight event of the day will be the Listed Belmont Sprint, where we will be siding with the Sean & Jake Casey-trained Dom To Shoot, who is coming off a last start victory in the Group 3 Northam Stakes, where he defeated most of his rivals that he will meet again on Saturday. This five-year-old gelding was given an absolute peach of a ride by William Pike in the Northam Stakes. With Pike retaining the ride, stepping up in distance to 1400m, and that he will be third-up – where he has never finished outside the top two in five starts – the race looks perfect for him to go back-to-back. This son of Shooting To Win, was very unlucky in the inaugural edition of The Joey when fresh, before going to the Northam Stakes, so with a bit more luck, this gelding could be undefeated this time in. As we said earlier, Pike will stick on Saturday and with his solid third-up record (5:3-2-0), Dom To Shoot is a clear on topper for us in the feature.

Best Bet at Belmont: Rusty Dreams
We have been with Rusty Dreams from the Michael Lane stable at her last two starts, and even though she finished third last start and did a lot wrong at her first attempt at 1600m, we believe the drop back in distance to 1400m and a three-week freshen will be perfect for her. This three-year-old filly looks to be a very promising youngster on the rise, winning three of her four races to start her career. At her first attempt at 1400m, this daughter of Universal Ruler was way too good for a couple of her rivals that we she will meet again on Saturday. One of the two horses that have beaten her in her short career is the top weight in this race, Catch These Hands. However, with the top weight rising 1.5kg and our girl staying at the same weight, we should see her turn the tables on their last meeting. William Pike will have his first ride on Rusty Dreams, and if he can find the lead without doing too much work, she should be too good for this field.

Next Best at Belmont: Catalpa
The second leg of the quaddie will feature another of our better bets at Belmont, with the Grant & Alana Williams-trained Catalpa seeking back-to-back wins after he was dominant in his return over 1200m at Ascot on April 29 last start. After spending seven months away from the racetrack, this four-year-old gelding was given one nice trial in preparation for his fresh run, which paid dividends for the son of Rios, as he settled in the one-one and finished over the top of the leaders to record an impressive 1.8 length victory. This guy has a very good second-up record, with two wins and a third from three starts, and after such a good first-up run, he should have only improved. On Saturday, he will get another apprentice jockey, by the name of Taj Dyson who has ridden him one before for a second-place finish. With the aid of Dyson’s 2kg claim, Catalpa should be able to jump from barrier 10 and settle in the second half of the field, before powering over the top of his rivals to make it two-from-two this campaign.

Best Value at Belmont: Advanced
The fourth race of the day will be a One Metro Win Handicap over 1600m, where we will be siding with Advanced from the Hayden Ballantyne yard, as he will be second-up on Saturday after running a disappointing last place over 1400m at Ascot on April 15. Although his first-up start wasn’t great, he did loom up nicely on the outside with the eventual runner-up and look to have something to offer before dying on his run with 200m to go. This son of Playing God will appreciate getting onto a Softer track, as he has three wins and two placings from six starts on wet tracks, while a switch to the Belmont track – where she has a win and three placings from five starts – will also be beneficial. Only two of his rivals have won in their last four starts, with one of them being a last start maiden winner, which leads us to believe that the form in the race isn’t strong. Jarrad Noske should settle Advanced in the second half of the field, and if he gets a bit of luck with 400m to go, he will be charging at the leaders late.
