What Bunbury Cup Day
Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104
When Saturday, March 11, 2023
First Race 1:08pm AWST

Due to the Bunbury track being renovated, the annual Bunbury Cup meeting will be run and won this Saturday at Ascot Racecourse. We expect to be racing on a Good 4 track, with more warm weather forecast for Friday and Saturday. The rail will return to the true position for the entire circuit, allowing the track to play as fairly as possible, and the first race will kick off at 1:08pm AWST.

Bunbury Cup Tip: No Apology

The $150,000 Listed Bunbury Cup over 2100m for stayers will be the highlight of the day, with eight of the ten runners meeting again after meeting in the Listed Detonator Stakes two weeks ago. We will be backing No Apology, trained by Stephen Miller, after he had one of the better runs in defeat in the Detonator Stakes, where he ground away and began to pull away from the rest of the field in the final 100m of the 1800m event. This son of Declaration Of War looks ready to take the step up to 2100m on Saturday, attempting the distance for the second time in his career after finishing second in the Listed Boulder Cup at Kalgoorlie last year. Lucy Warwick should look to settle just behind the leaders again from barrier two, and if he gets even luck, he will play a significant role in the finish.

Bunbury Stakes Tip: Creator

The Listed Bunbury Stakes will be the second feature event on Bunbury Cup Day, with the Chris & Michael Gangemi-trained Creator our top pick after finishing second in the Listed Pinjarra Classic over 1300m on February 26. This six-year-old gelding was unlucky in his most recent start, as he didn’t get much room in the home straight, but he still managed to run on from dead last and finish only a length down. When running from the back of the field, this son of Redoute’s Choice defeated Acromantula in the final 50m of an RTG 72+ Handicap over 1200m. This gelding looks ready to step up to 1400m now that he is third-up, and if he can maintain the blistering turn of foot that he has shown in his last two starts, he should prove too strong in the final stages. The $5 currently on offer with most online betting sites looks to be a great bet in the second of the feature events on Bunbury Cup Day.

Best Bet: Cywer

Our best bet of the afternoon will be the Jason Miller-trained Cywer in the fourth race, who will be second-up on Saturday after finishing second-up over 1200m at this track on February 18. At her most recent start, this four-year-old mare appeared to be the winner at the 100m mark before Twice A Fortnight flashed through up the inside and won by a neck on the line. This Trade Fair daughter has finished in the top two in six of her seven race starts to date, with two wins and four seconds. With one start under her belt this season, this mare should be ready to perform at her best on Saturday when she steps up to 1400m for the third time in her career, looking for her second victory at the distance. Clint Johnston-Porter will ride this mare again, and he will try to settle her outside the leader or in the one-one, and if she doesn’t have to do too much work in the early stages of the race, she should be winning.

Next Best Bet: Multinational

The Neville Parnham-trained Multinational will be back in action on Saturday after a tough first-up win at Pinjarra over 1400m on February 18, when he sat a length off a very hot tempo and had just enough in the tank to get the better of Weaponson in the final stages. With a strong return to racing at Pinjarra a few weeks ago, this son of Zoustar should be very difficult to beat on Saturday. This gelding has a very good record at the 1400m, with four wins and two seconds coming from eight starts at the distance. Brad Parnham has ridden this gelding in all but one of his starts, so he’ll know where to settle him to keep him comfortable and in a rhythm, and if he travels into the race like he did last time, something will have to run out of their skin to get past him in the final 100m.

Best Value: Vast Art

Our value play of the day will be Vast Art from the Darren McAuliffe yard who has only had the four career race starts, only missing the placings once when making his debut back in September of last year. This son of Flying Artie was very good first-up this campaign, proving too good in a 1300m Maiden at Belmont on February 16, before going to Ascot on March 1 and running a gallant third in a No Metro Wins Handicap in his first race start outside of maiden grade. With more speed in this race on Saturday, we should Chris Parnham settle behind the likes of Royal Splendour, Major Max and Ace Command, giving him the run of the race from barrier two. If Parnham can get him off the back of the leaders as the field straightens, we should get a nice run for our money at double figure odds with online bookmakers.
