The Western Australian Turf Club will host a competitive nine-race card this Saturday afternoon, highlighted by the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic for fillies and mares. With warm weather and no rain on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to be racing on a perfect Good 4 surface. The rail will go out to the +5m position for the entire circuit, with racing set to kick off at 11:49am AWST.

Sheila Gwynne Classic Tip: Angelic Miss

The Simon Miller-trained Angelic Miss heads into the feature fourth-up this preparation. This six-year-old mare has three top-four finishes in a row, including a third-place finish in the Charleson Classic over 1200m at this track on April 7, indicating that she has returned from a seven-week freshen in good form. This daughter of Savabeel will compete at 1400m for the fourth time in her 21-race career, looking for her second victory at the distance. After finishing strong in the final 400m of her previous race, she appears to be ready to step up in distance and looks to be a good bet in the feature event. Patrick Carbery will ride this mare again after riding her in two of her last three starts, and if he can get Angelic Miss on the back of Gunmetal Grey around the home turn, she should be too strong in the final stages.

Best Bet at Ascot: Rusty Dreams

Our best bet at Ascot will be in the first race, where the Michael Lane-trained Rusty Dreams will be looking to maintain her undefeated record in her fourth career start, following her dominant win at this track over 1400m last time out. This three-year-old filly will be stepping up to 1600m for the first time in her short career, and given her dominance in her most recent victory, the increase in distance should not be a concern for her, and she looks to be a very nice filly on the rise. This daughter of Universal Ruler prefers to settle on speed, so the race should be set up perfectly for her to jump and lead or settle in behind the leaders in the box seat. On Saturday, Chris Parnham will continue his strong association with this filly, and with Parnham riding her in all of her trials and races, we expect Rusty Dreams to have every opportunity to prove her class and improve her record to four from four.

Next Best at Ascot: Sky Duke

The Neville Parnham-trained Sky Duke returns from a three-month layoff having had one trial over 1000m at Belmont. Throughout his nine-race career, this four-year-old gelding has one win and a third from two first-up runs. This son of Playing God has only finished outside the top four once in nine starts, and with many of his rivals on Saturday mixing up their form, he has found a very nice race where he can earn his third career victory. Brad Parnham should be able to push forwards from barrier three and take the lead on the rail at his own pace before looking to kick clear on the home turn and give the rest of the field something to chase.

Best Value at Ascot: My Mate

The Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained My Mate will be making his first appearance for his new trainers after a 10-month layoff. This five-year-old gelding’s most recent victory was a strong performance in which he defeated The Velvet Queen, who has since finished second in the Group 3 La Trice Classic, which is excellent form for this RTG66+ Handicap. On Saturday, this God Has Spoken son will jump from barrier five, where we expect William Pike to take the lead or settle outside the other natural leader in Born To Talk. If the leaders keep a steady pace and don’t overdo it, My Mate should have a good lead and give the rest of the field something to chase in the final stages of the race.
