Sandown Hillside Betting Preview

The Hillside track at Sandown hosts a nine race meeting on Saturday on a track rated a Good 4, with the rail in the true position the entire circuit. Horsebetting.com.au brings you our Sandown race-by-race preview along with the best bets, top tips and free quaddie numbers for the meeting set to kick off at 12pm AEST.

Race 1 – Super Vobis 2YO Handicap (1000m)

A small field of nine two-year-olds are set to contest the first at Sandown on Saturday afternoon in what looks to be a competitive little event. We have settled on the Dabernig & Hayes-trained Qeyaady in the opener who got his deserved maiden victory last start in an all-the-way victory over this track and distance. Prior to his win, the I Am Invincible colt chased home the classy Paulele and arguably the best two-year-old this campaign in Anamore the start prior. We think she will benefit greatly from that first up win, and will take some catching on Saturday.

Race 2 – Benchmark 78 Handicap (1000m)

Best Value Bet

We were with Pravro last time out at Caulfield on April 10, and despite finishing fifth her effort suggested there is no point in jumping off the son of Lonhro. The veteran had peaked on his run in the shadows of the winning posts and managed to finish fifth, beaten by just over 1.5 lengths. His run prior to that was massive when caught in traffic behind the smart Sisstar at The Valley on March 19. Sisstar goes around as one of the favoured runners in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide on Saturday, and if Pravro can run up to that form here on Saturday she will prove hard to beat.

Best ValueRace 2 – Pravro (#5) $12.00 with Sportsbet

Race 3 – Benchmark 84 Handicap (1300m)

Best Bet Of The Day

The Danny O’Brien-trained Cordilla is the clear class in the BM84 and goes around as our best bet on the Sandown card. The Shamus Award mare beat home the impressive Rainbiel at Caulfield on April 10, and if she brings that form on Saturday none of her rivals will be able to go with her over the concluding stages. The slight concern is where does she get in the run from barrier one? If Will Price opts to ride her cold out of the machine over 1300m, he should be able to get Cordilla off the rails to loop the field and be charging down the centre of the track late.

Best Bet Of The DayRace 3 – Cordilla (#5) $2.40 with Sportsbet

Race 4 – Benchmark 84 Handicap (2400)

Johandough was an ugly watch for punters in the opening event at Caulfield on April 10, when strung up in traffic at a crucial time, and was seemingly a good thing beat. From barrier seven on Saturday, we expect Dean Yendall to take the Turffontein mare to the front of the field and take luck out of the equation. She was a smart winner on the Lakeside track two starts back when clearly headed at the 300m mark, but rallied strongly along the rails to win going away from her rivals. A similar effort here will have her back in the winners stall.

Selections: 9-8-3-5

Race 5 – Handicap (1400)

Next Best Bet

The Nick Ryan-trained Dice Roll was an impressive winner on his Australian debut, where he wore down a tearaway leader and won in smrt fashion. He had to sustain a long run from the 800m mark but got to the leaders girth in the shadows of the winning post and won in soft fashion in the end. The former Hong Kong-based son of Showcasing will derive benefit from that first up run, and remaining at 1400m from the tough first up run will look to make it two wins from two starts in Australia.

Next BestRace 5 – Dice Roll (#7) $3.50 with Sportsbet

Race 6 – Fillies & Mares Benchmark 78 (1300m)

The opening leg of the Sandown quaddie is for the fillies and mares and the Maher & Eustace-trained Charleise looks hard to beat in an open affair. The Foxwedge mare was a dominant winner in weaker company over the 1400m on this track on March 31, and with five weeks between runs looks well placed to make it back to back victories. From barrier 11, we expect Will Price to take her to the rear of the field, and along with his 2kg claim, they should be savaging the line late just 0.5kg above the minimum weight in the race.

Selections: 5-7-10-12

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1368168_06]

Race 7 – 3YO Fillies Benchmark 70 Handicap (1300m)

The Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained River Night settled no better than four wide the trip in the VOBIS Gold Dash behind La Mexicana on April 17. The Night Of Thunder stuck on bravely to only go down by a length and a half and will be primed third up from a spell. Her sole win in her career came when she was third up, and having chased home the quality duo of Minhaaj and La Mexicana so far this campaign she looks well placed to bring up her second win. With speed drawn on either side of her, she should be able to find a spot midfield and prove hard to hold out late.

Selections: 3-7-12-11

Race 8 – Benchmark 84 Handicap (1700m)

Dirty Deeds continually find a way to get beaten this campaign with a string of minor placed finishes to his name. He hit the lead with 50m to go at Bendigo on April 21, but ran into one better on the winning post. From barrier six we expect Daniel Moor to have Ellerton & Zahra-trained Dundeel gelding settled in the moving line. With the long home straight that the Hillside track presents, Dirty Deeds will be able to work through the gears nicely and be savaging the line late on to record a deserved victory.

Selections: 11-2-3-6

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1368168_08]

Race 9 – Super Vobis 3YO Handicap

Rose Quartz did plenty wrong when on debut at Bendigo on April 6, but her untapped ability got her across the line in front of her rivals. She had shown a smart turn of foot in a trial leading into that race making Group 1 winner Portland Sky look second rate. From barrier 11 on Saturday, she will need a touch of luck in the running, but with only 54kg on her back then she looks hard to beat. The Written Tycoon filly has a sharp turn of foot and if she gets an economical run in transit then she will take some beating in the final race on the card.

Selections: 15-8-5-10
