The Group 2 Sandown Guineas is a 1600m event held at Caulfield Racecourse under set weights conditions for three-year-old horses, boasting a prize pool of $300,000.
Outside of being run over 2100m in 1968 and 1969, the Sandown Guineas has been run at 1600m every other year and is a final target race for three-year-olds at the end of the spring.
After being classified as a Principal race until 1978, the Sandown Guineas was upgraded to Group 2 level from 1979 onwards.
Due to the change in dates for the Victorian Spring Carnival, late season three-year-olds can target this race at the back end of the year.
Notable winners of the Sandown Guineas include: See You In Heaven (2022), Pretty Brazen (2019), Ringerdingding (2018), Pressday (2010), Scenic Warrior (2000), Over (1999), Special Dane (1997), Navy Seal (1992), Durbridge (1990), So Called (1977) and Taj Rossi (1973).

Recent Sandown Guineas results
- The Ciaron Maher-trained Snitzanova ($6.50) claimed her third straight win of the preparation, storming clear in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m). The daughter of Snitzel put the writing on the wall in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle last time out, sitting three-wide without cover to secure her first stakes victory at start three. She was able to lob into a more favourable position this time around, with Daniel Stackhouse stalking his rivals from the one-one position as Colmar ($17.00) and Craig Williams dictated terms throughout. It turned into a real sit-and-sprint affair as they turned for home, with Snitzanova the first to challenge in the final 400m, while Bittercreek ($5.50) was circling down the centre of the course. The well-supported favourite with horse racing bookmakers, Pisces ($3.40), was nowhere to be seen in the concluding stages, with the son of Frosted crowded behind a wall of horses under Ben Melham. Snitzanova was edging clear in the final furlong, and although Bittercreek continued to reel in the margin, it was to no avail as Snitzanova was thrown over the line by Stackhouse to secure victory in the three-year-old feature.
- Serasana ($13.00) has produced a devastating turn of foot to run away from her rivals to take out the Group 2 Sandown Guineas at Caulfield, giving Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock their first victory in the race and John Allen’s second in six years. The three-year-old filly hadn’t won since her debut 12 months ago, but after running fourth in a Benchmark 64 Handicap at Sandown last start, the daughter of Snitzel proved too slick. Craig Williams took Modown ($6.00) to the lead and Allen chose to push forward and settle outside the unlikely leader, with Power Of The Brave ($7.50) forced to race three-wide outside of Riverina Power ($41.00) and Vivy Air ($4.60). The market elect, Arkansaw Kid ($2.80), trucked up to the leading quartet five-wide, but as he looked the winner, Serasana kicked strongly on the inside and booted clear at the 200m mark to put two lengths on her rivals. Maintaining her margin on the race favourite, who held onto second place, Serasana ran through the line as strong as anything to record a 2.5-length win, with Vivy Air running home into third.
- Just one filly had won the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) in the past 16 years and See You In Heaven (+320) has emulated the performance of Pretty Brazen in 2019, taking out the 2022 edition at Caulfield in fine style. Craig Williams settled the daughter of Divine Prophet up on the pace and she found plenty in the straight to deny The Fortune Teller (+380) who was forced to race four wide without cover. Outside of the runner-up, Kings Consort (+1400) got his nose down to nab third place.
- Blue Army (+1700) jumped from maiden grade to claim the Sandown Guineas at Caulfield. The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper settled behind the leaders before peeling off their backs to let down with a burst of acceleration. After leading the field up around the home turn, Blazerro (+1900) and Festival Dancer (+200) held on for second and third, respectively.
- The 2021 edition of the Group 2 Sandown Guineas produced one of the closest finishes we have seen in some time, where Allibor (+340) just got the better of Sweet Reply (+170) at Sandown. The victory was Symon Wilde’s second Sandown Guineas success as a trainer after he co-trained So Swift in 2011 with his father Bill. Both Allibor and Sweet Reply made their runs together on the outside and quickly gathered in the leader, Valanetti (+900), before fighting out the finish in the final strides.
- Pretty Brazen (+250) has snuck up the inside of the leaders to take out the Group 2 Sandown Guineas and just hold on from the fast-finishing Conqueror (+1300). The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained filly settled behind the leaders, but as they rolled off the rail in the home straight, she took the run and gained the lead with 200m to go. Luke Currie got everything he could out of the daughter of Brazen Beau, and it was just enough as she fought off the challenge of Conqueror and Heart Of Puissance (+320) late.
