The Rubiton Stakes is a prestigious Group 2 sprint hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club at Caulfield, open to elite sprinters.
First contested in 1989, it was won by the legendary Zeditave. The race covers 1100m under Set Weights and Penalties conditions, with a prize pool of $300,000 in 2026.
Named after Cox Plate winner Rubiton, the event started as a Listed race, achieved Group 3 status in 1991, and was upgraded to Group 2 in 2013.
Historically, mares struggled in this race until a trio of victories early in the 2020s. Notably, Nature Strip triumphed in 2019, on his way to becoming one of the world’s top sprinters.
Anaheed (2020) and Prophet’s Thumb (2021) further highlighted the growing success of fillies and mares.
Prominent past winners include Schillaci (1993, 1995), Super Elegant (2003–2005), Bomber Bill (2006), Lankan Rupee (2014), and Chautauqua (2015).
In 2024, Kallos claimed victory ahead of Asfoora and Zapateo.

How to bet on the Rubiton Stakes
Every horse racing bookmaker will have betting on the Rubiton Stakes available. Many of them will open an early market so you can wager on the race a week or so in advance.
Unlike many of the bigger races the Rubiton Stakes acceptances are only done a few days before the race so you won’t find a market many weeks in advance.
Aussie bookies like Dabble offer all of the usual bet types on the race and you will have the option of using ‘boosted odds’ at some of them. This simply means you place your win bet and use the boosted odds option, which could send a $10 shot out to $15.
This provides great value and is as good a reason as any to bet online.

Recent runnings of the Rubiton Stakes:
- High-quality performer Kallos secured a spot in the esteemed Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), making a remarkable comeback from a 23-week hiatus to triumph in the $300,000 Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m). Under the skilful guidance of jockey Blake Shinn, riding for trainer James Cummings, Kallos made a decisive move down the centre of the track, clinching victory by a length over the short-priced favourite Asfoora ($1.75), with stablemate Zapateo ($8.50) finishing a long head back in third. Boasting his fourth stakes success, Kallos now boasts a record of seven wins, two seconds, and a third from 19 starts, accumulating earnings of $797,205.
- Scenes of jubilation surrounded the Sandown mounting yard as the Julius Sandhu-trained Lofty Strike reigned supreme in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes. Having not been seen at the races since finishing a length off Roch ‘N’ Horse in the Group 1 Champions Sprint on November 5, the three-year-old colt showed no signs of ring rust when unleashing a stunning turn of foot to claim his second career Group 2 success. The race set up perfectly for a backmarker to swoop, with the Peter Moody-trained Oxley Road making the 1100m event a genuinely run event. Despite race favourite Uncommon James looking the winner with 200m to go, it was Lofty Strike under Craig Newitt who went home the best
- The punters got it right in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday with the well backed favourite Marine One ($3.20) taking out the event. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained colt recorded his fourth race victory and first at stakes level in the $300,000 feature. Jamie Kah produced a top ride to guide the colt to victory. Kah settled Marine One in third position, getting the run of the race behind the two leaders. Staying off the fence, which didn’t seem the place to be at Caulfield, Marine One then hit the front 50m from home to draw away to win by over a length.
