Rosehill Gardens betting tips & odds – Saturday, 29 August 2020

Rosehill

A cracking nine-race card full of Group and Listed racing sets us up for a brilliant afternoon at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. The three-year-olds are back in the San Domenico Stakes and the Ming Dynasty, while some quality stayers make their return in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup. The rail is out 3m for the entire circumference of the course, with the track rated a Good 4 for the first time on a Saturday in Sydney since mid-April. Race 1 is scheduled for 12:05pm AEST, with the first quaddie leg at 3:10pm.

Best Bet
Race 8 – Mugatoo @ $2.20 Sportsbet

Kris Lees looks to have a real spring competitor with former UK galloper Mugatoo. He has won four from six since arriving in Australia, including the Canberra Cup, and was narrowly defeated in the Group 3 Manion Cup before finishing midfield in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes in the autumn. He returned in brilliant fashion a month ago to win the Listed Winter Challenge at this track over 1500m and has since won a Gosford trial. With Kerrin McEvoy aboard from barrier three, he should settle a touch off midfield and come with a big bounding run late. He has won three from five on top of the ground, which is a surface he hasn’t seen since his Australian debut back in January when he was victorious at Randwick, so he should appreciate the Good 4. He looks to be a genuine Metropolitan Handicap hope, with even bigger targets in mind given they have nominated him for both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup later in the spring. Also keep an eye on Rondinella, who we highlighted in our Spring Racing Contenders series earlier this month. She goes around at $26 in this race and could add value to multiples.

Next Best
Race 3 – Discharged @ $6.50 Sportsbet

Discharged for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott looks a massive chance second up from a spell. He ran third when first up after sitting on a hot tempo and ground away to the line well, with lack of race fitness playing a part in his 3.6L defeat. Rachel King hops off and hands the reins to Tim Clark, who is notoriously good at winning on frontrunners and knows the horse from two trials leading into his first-up run. Back on a dry track (8:3-0-1), he should be in his element second up over 1500m. Although he is drawn in gate nine, one from the outside, Clark will cruise across and take up what maps to be an uncontested lead, with all bar Academy being natural midfielders or backmarkers. The $6.50 with most online bookmakers looks obscene for a horse who will thrive in the conditions.

Best Value
Race 6 – Plonka @ $10 Sportsbet

Plonka has had a rap on him since day one, and we think this is the campaign where he will really start to show his ability. He won a TAB Highway back in November last year at Rosehill before going on to win the Grafton Provincial Championship Qualifier and run third in the final, where he was beaten only 0.3L. He’s had a hitout in an easy trial at Grafton and looks ready to go first up. He’s finished top two in seven out of nine starts on a dry track and is a multiple placegetter when fresh from a spell, so he should be very close here. While he hasn’t won over 1100m, he looks to be sharp enough to figure here at odds.
