San Domenico Stakes 2020 tips, value bets & form guide

Peltzer
Peltzer could be the horse to beat in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

Despite just the six starters, the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes for three-year-olds over 1100m is arguably the race of the afternoon at Rosehill Gardens. It sees the return of budding stars Peltzer, Mamaragan and Doubtland, as well as last start winner and race favourite Anders. There is only $1.30 separating these runners at the top of the market, with a gap of $10 to Every Rose and Osamu. Anders will look to lead from barrier five, with Peltzer and Every Rose both prominent from their low gates.

Best Bet
Peltzer @ $3.70 Sportsbet

This is a mouth-watering clash between some of the three-year-old heavyweights, and we think there are only three winning chances in the race. Peltzer, in our opinion, is one of the leading contenders for the Golden Rose in a month’s time, and his trial victory last Tuesday only further stamped his claim. Unbeaten in three starts, the So You Think colt has been ultra-impressive in beating a number of subsequent winners including the likes of Anders, Achiever and maiden runner Overlord, who ran fourth in the JJ Atkins and starts favourite in the Ming Dynasty. Kerrin McEvoy has partnered the strong colt to his last two victories and rode him in the trial last week, building a strong partnership for the spring. Drawn ideally in gate two, he is likely to settle in the front three and power away first up as he heads towards the Golden Rose.

Next Best
Mamaragan @ $4.50 Sportsbet

Mamaragan is the class horse of the field, with his maiden win coming in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes on debut. He then ran third in the Golden Slipper and Sires Produce, both at Group 1 level, thus building an impressive resume after only three starts and one campaign. Glen Boss picks up the ride on Saturday and will likely settle bang on midfield from the outside barrier and be well within striking distance in the straight. This is the colt’s first run at 1100m, which we fear might be slightly too sharp for him first up as he too builds towards the Golden Rose. In two trials prior to Saturday’s assignment, he was given a quiet time in behind in his first and ran second in his most recent. There, he finished behind Farnan and beat home Fierce Impact, who placed first up in the Group 1 Winx Stakes last Saturday. That form suggests he is going well enough to be competitive here.

One To Watch
Anders @ $3.20 Sportsbet

Anders won his last three starts by a cumulative margin of more than 12L, which includes a 5L romping in the Listed Rosebud first up this prep. Those wins have all come on wet, leader-friendly tracks, which makes us wonder if he is just a wet-track bully. His last defeat came at the hands of Peltzer on a Good 4 at Kembla, which are similar conditions to what he will have here. Prior to that, he only managed a midfield effort at the Gold Coast. He should lead the field here but could be bugged by Every Rose if they decide to utilise the low gate, or by Peltzer, who naturally races handily. With race fitness on his side, he will be in it for a very long way and is a definite winning chance, but we want to see him do it well on top of the ground before we get overly confident. As for Doubtland, who sits on the third line of betting, we weren’t overly convinced by his trial when pushed along behind Peltzer, and we aren’t totally sold on the opposition he’s beaten in his two career starts.
