New Year’s Eve racing heads to Royal Randwick Racecourse for a competitive 10-race program set to finish off the 2022 NSW racing season. The Randwick track has seen plenty of racing over the last month, so now the rail moves out +3m the entire circuit. We’ve got some rain forecast in the lead up to race-day, so although we’re currently listed to be racing on a Good 4 surface, we’ve looked at the possibility of getting a minor downgrade to Soft 5 ground for Saturday afternoon.

Best Bet at Randwick: Garza Blanca
We found it hard to look anywhere else for our best bet of the afternoon on Saturday with Garza Blanca clearly looking the hardest to beat in this 1300m BM72 contest for the three-year-old’s. His last start effort at Rosehill was nothing short of brilliant after being left with too much to do turning for home on December 3 behind Felix Majestic. They ran cracking time, and it turned out to be a big advantage to be a go forward horse on that occasion, so Garza Blanca was huge throughout that run to only go down by less than a length. He’s got fitness on plenty of his rivals here and from barrier six Brenton Avdulla should only need to finding cover while pressing forward to be too good for BM72 level. He’s a classy type and if this son of I Am Invincible can replicate his peak performance from Cranbourne two starts back, the close to even money on offer with online bookmakers should look value.

Next Best at Randwick: Dehorned Unicorn
Dehorned Unicorn looks ready to win again this preparation in the second leg of the quaddie as the Joseph Pride-trained four-year-old looks to have found a nice assignment third-up this Saturday. After a strong effort in behind the likely Canterbury Sprint favourite I Am Me last start at Randwick on December 17, Dehorned Unicorn looks to step back in grade and trip here to the 1100m at BM78 level where this Star Witness gelding found his initial win first-up. Sam Clipperton takes the reins here as he did in the first-up win and will be looking to produce a similar performance on Saturday afternoon. He’ll be looking for the one-by-one from barrier five and provided he can lob somewhere around that position, we’re happy to be siding with him over the other market elect Vowmaster who is dual accepted for Canterbury on Sunday. If Vowmaster does withdraw from this event, Dehorned Unicorn will come in even further, so be sure to get on early.

Next Best Again at Randwick: Kettle Hill
Kettle Hill is a lightly raced six-year-old trained by the Maher & Eustace team and is dual accepted on Saturday for both Randwick and Moonee Valley. If they elect to come to this penultimate affair at Randwick, he’s a horse we want to be backing. His first-up performance behind Savannah Cloud at Sandown on December 10 was a total forgive and would’ve found most punters black-book as this Gleneagles gelding was caught at the rear of the field and squeezing between runners to hit the line for fourth. We don’t mind the wide gate here and down to BM78 level, a race like this looks well within reach second-up and provided the team make the trip to Sydney, Jason Collett looks to be picking up a very nice ride and a progressive type moving forward. He’ll be storming home again on Saturday, but we think he can round up his rivals to score.

Best Value at Randwick: Waverider Buoy
The fourth race of the card holds our best value bet of the afternoon with the Chris Waller-trained filly Waverider Buoy. She returns after a 119-day spell and has strong form references as an early three-year-old with runs behind VRC Derby winner Manzoice and Furious Stakes winner North Star Lass just to name a few, and if she can find her best on return, we’re getting a great each-way price for this daughter of Nicconi. Her barrier trial leading in was outstanding as well running in behind Alpha One and stablemate Vowmaster at Rosehill on December 8. Her only career win came first-up last preparation as well, so she looks to profile well for a BM78 against the fillies and mares. Jockey Regan Bayliss will be looking to utilise the inside draw and be positive along with the 54kg and if she’s retuned as well as we think she has the $9 on offer looks a good bet.
