Where Royal Randwick Racecourse, Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
When Saturday, April 24, 2021
First Race 11:55am AEST
Feature Race Race 7 – Group 1 All Aged Stakes

After a successful fortnight for The Championships at Royal Randwick, we line up again for the All Aged Stakes and Champagne Stakes at Group 1 level. A nine race program has been assembled which will see the field for the first race face the starter at 11:55am AEST. The track is currently rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 6m from the 1000m to the winning post and 4m for the remainder of the course. Horsebetting.com.au’s form analyst has done the form for all nine races at Randwick on Saturday and given you his top four in each race, as well as best bets, value picks, Quaddie numbers and previews for both Group 1 races and four of the undercard races.

Race 1 – Class 3 Highway (1200m)

The country runners come to town to kick off the day on Saturday and we are with the favourite, Ceasefire. Paul Messara’s three-year-old gelding has been dominant in his two career starts to date, winning at Tamworth and Muswellbrook by 6 lengths and 1.75 lengths respectively. The son of Panzer Division has carried big weights in both starts, so he should appreciate dropping down to 54.5kg and drawing beautifully in gate eight under Craig Williams. He should be up on the pace and be winning this. Favourite backers should be able to rejoice early.

Selections: 12-1-3-7

Race 2 – Group 3 James H B Carr Stakes (1400m)

The second race of the day marks the start of a James McDonald streak, hopefully. He partners Chris Waller’s Matchmaker in this 1400m Group 3 against her own age and sex. Her win in the PJ Bell Stakes on April 10 was as good as any over the 1200m, and she looks to be crying out for 1400m. Drawn the outside alley, McDonald will have the option to be right up on the speed in what looks to be a slowly run race. Kiku the stablemate is the main danger, while All Hallows’ Eve will be hoping for rain.
Selections: 1-2-6-4

Race 3 – Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m)

This is a field of nine, but you wouldn’t know it if you only looked at the bookie’s board. The top three in the market control this race; Lion’s Roar, Khoekhoe and High Supremacy all sit between $2 and $3.70 and then it is $34 or worse the rest. We are siding with the latter of the three in High Supremacy. He will appreciate the rise to 2000m while the other two are coming back from runs in the Australian Derby and he has drawn the best of the three in barrier two under James McDonald. He has the more upside at this stage of their campaigns.
Selections: 3-1-2-7

Race 4 – Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m)

Zaaki could not have impressed more in his Australian debut when sixth to Cascadian in the Doncaster Handicap on April 10. The six-year-old had only two behind him at the 400m mark before closing off exceptionally well to run sixth beaten just over three lengths. He rises 5.5kg in the weights but this is against much easier opposition. Drawn ideally in barrier five, the Neasham-trained gelding should be able to settle a touch better than midfield and he should be simply too good. James McDonald can make it three in a row with this runner.

Race 5 – Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m)

The Hall Mark Stakes shapes to be a cracking contest over six furlongs, and it is a pretty open betting race too. We have found some value in the James Cummings-trained gelding, Roheryn. The son of Lonhro was very good against the pattern of the day at Rosehill when third in the Star Kingdom Stakes, so he should be appreciative of getting to Randwick on a Good 4. Jamie Kah will do the steering from barrier five which is a big plus, and he meets Signore Fox 2.5kg better at the weights so we expect him to be able to turn around the 1.5 length margin. Eleven Eleven is the danger after a good run in the TJ Smith Stakes when sixth.

Selections: 4-8-9-1

Race 6 – Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m)

The babies are set to contest the third Group 1 in Sydney for two-year-olds in the Champagne Stakes over a mile. Captivant was very good in the Sires’ Produce after coming from second last on the turn to finish third, beaten three lengths by the very talented Anamoe. He has drawn the inside alley on Saturday under James McDonald, which should see him settle a bit closer behind a speed that won’t be as solid as last start. The son of Capitalist has 1600m written all over him, and the stable certainly know how to set horses for this race having won four of the last 11 runnings.

Race 7 – Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m)

The final Group 1 of the Sydney Autumn shapes to be a ripping contest as always. The field of 13 has four 2021 Autumn Group 1 winners in the field, including the favourite Masked Crusader who comes off a second to Nature Strip. He has drawn poorly in barrier 12 and he can be a touch tardy out of the gates which is of some concern for favourite backers, so we are going to go against him and back one at huge overs. Three-year-old colt Peltzer absolutely loves Randwick (6:5-0-0) and comes out of the Star Kingdom Stakes when being ridden quieter. He has the chance from barrier eight to be ridden three or four pairs back again on the outside of runners, and in a race that possesses a decent amount of speed, he can be finishing strongly over the 1400m on the minimum. $41 is absurd.

Race 8 – Benchmark 100 (1400m)

This Benchmark 100 race is $5.50 the field, and while we do like one at the top of the market, we have a slight reason to be against her too. Nudge has been knocking on the door in both runs this campaign over 1350m and 1400m respectively but she has been a victim of circumstance, mainly caused by bad barriers. She jumped from barrier 13 of 13 last start and finished off with the best last 800m race sectional of the day over 1400m to run third to Starspangled Rodeo and Great News, only to be beaten 0.7 lengths. She has finally drawn a barrier on Saturday (4) and drops 4.5kg from her last run which is super, but we just would have loved her to be up to the mile. She will be extremely hard to beat and is a special, but we are just going to be slightly cautious at 1400m and hope that we haven’t gone a run early.

Next Best Of The DayRace 8 – Nudge (#14) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Race 9 – Benchmark 88 (1200m)

We get to see a pretty handy one in the last race attempt to bounce back and turn the tables on his last start conqueror. John O’Shea’s four-year-old gelding Lost and Running was undefeated from four runs prior to his most recent start when beaten in a photo over 1100m by Enchanted Heart at Canterbury. The son of Per Incanto hasn’t been over 1200m before, but he has drawn ideally in barrier one to boot through and lead under none other than James McDonald. He meets Enchanted Heart 0.5kg better off and after two tough runs on wet tracks, he should appreciate getting on to a Good 4 where he is undefeated. He can bounce back in style.
Selections: 2-12-11-15
