What Spring Champion Stakes Day
Where Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
When Saturday, October 22, 2022
First Race 12:30pm AEDT

The 2022 Spring Champion Stakes meeting at Randwick on Saturday will feature a massive 10-race card, with the Spring Champion and The Invitation highlighting the big day. Both of those races have $2 million prize pools with the winner walking away with $1 million. The track is currently rated as a Soft 7, and with some rain on the forecast for the next few days it seems unlikely that we will get a track any better than that come race day. The rail will be in the 4m position for the entire circuit, while racing gets under way at 12:30pm AEDT.

Race 1: Kirkham Plate (1000m)

In the opening race on Spring Champion Stakes Day we have a two-year-old race where every runner will be on debut. The James Cummings-trained Barber looked like a very nice type in his two trials, especially after his most recent trial where this son of Exceed And Excel was hard held in the back on the 820m trial at Warwick Farm on October 18. Godolphin will have five of the 10 runners in the opening race so keep an eye out for any big money moves with the bookies as that could be a very good guide on who they think is their best chance.

Selections:

Race 2: Highway Handicap (1800m)

The Paul Shailer-trained Sassy Choice looks to be a very good chance at odds to take out the Highway Handicap over 1800m. This daughter of Choisir comes through a Port Macquarie Class 3 over 1500m where she ran home very strong to just pip the leader on the line and record win number three at start 13. On Saturday this mare will partner up with the inform Victorian jockey, Blake Shinn, and from barrier 14 she will most likely drop out the back and be flying home late to hopefully get her first metro win of her career.

Selections:

Race 3: Midway Handicap (1200m)

In the Midway Handicap over 1200m we will be siding the aptly named Super Bright for the Nathan Doyle yard after her impressive run at Canterbury last start on the Heavy 10. On the home turn this daughter of Super One looked like she was the winner as she loomed up nicely to the leader, but she was in the inferior part of the track and ended up peaking on her run late and running third. Jason Collett will take the ride on her today and she may have to race out of her comfort zone and sit at the back of the field due to drawing barrier 18, but we think there will be enough speed on in this race to allow her to find the outside and be very strong late.

Race 4: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1600m)

Willinga Rufio and Tyler Schiller went way too fast out in front last start over 1800m at Rosehill on September 28 and Mark Newnham would not have been happy with the way his talented four-year-old gelding was ridden, as he faded out badly to run second last. With a lack of pace or natural leader in this race, Tyler Schiller should be able to find the front uncontested and lead for a long way as he should be in peak fitness third-up. This son of Dundeel will appreciate the rain affected ground and the step back in distance to 1600m, when considering the fact that he likes to lead and dominate his races from the front.

Selections:

Race 5: Vale Beryl White Handicap (1600m)

Hugh Bowman will take his second ever sit on the Chris Waller-trained Bigboyroy as he steps back in grade from running in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes and Theo Marks Stakes at his two runs back this preparation. Now that this son of Dissident drops down in class to a Quality Handicap over 1600m, where he has a very good record (13:3-3-4) and he should now be hard fit in what will be his third start back from a spell. Bowman will have to make his mind up early as he has drawn barrier 10 of 10 and this gelding likes to be on pace, so Bowman will hopefully push this guy out of the barriers and take up a prominent position. As long as the track doesn’t get into the Heavy range by the time we reach race five, this guy will be very hard to beat with any luck in running.

Race 5 – Silk #1 Bigboyroy (10)

Race 6: Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m)

Jerome Hunter brings his star three-year-old gelding Thron Bone to Sydney for the first time as he will contest the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes over 1200m for three-year-olds. Last preparation this son of Thronum won three on the bounce at Flemington and Caulfield in June and July, which included winning the Next Gen Sprinters Final. Jerome Hunter has chosen to begin this gelding’s preparation with no official jump-out or barrier trial, so he is obviously happy with how he is tracking and he will be fit in his return to racing on Saturday.

Race 7: Group 2 Callander-Presnell (1600m)

Last Saturday we were with the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained A Lot More Love and now that she is on the seven day back-up going into the Callander-Presnell, we see no problem with diving in again at the $8 odds on offer with most online bookmakers. The Caulfield Guineas winner and odds-on favourite, Golden Mile, will be very tough to beat but we think that he could be running out of gas in the last 100m where this filly will be running home strong once again. This daughter of Sebring took out the Listed Reginald Allen in great style, running home from the back of the field with a booming turn of foot running away and through the line very impressively giving us the indication that she will eat up the mile.

Selections:

Race 8: Spring Champion Stakes (2000m)

The feature race on Spring Champion Stakes Day will feature a full field of 12 runners with most of the three-year-olds attempting the staying distance of 2000m for the first time, with some looking to push onto the VRC Derby next Saturday. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Elliptical is the current favourite at $4 with online bookmakers, closely followed by Williamsburg ($5) and She’s Extreme ($6).

Race 9: The Invitation (1400m)

One of the richest fillies and mares-only races on the Australian racing calendar, The Invitation, will be run and won on Saturday over 1400m, with last year’s winner, Icebath, returning to defend her crown. The bookies currently have last year’s winner, Icebath, as the current favourite at $4.60, followed by Nimalee ($6). Forbidden Love and Espiona are at $6.50, rounding the only runners under double-figures.

Race 10: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1200m)

We will be looking to finish off Spring Champion Stakes Day the same we that we have started it, with the combination of James Cummings and Blake Shinn, when they combine with Bacchanalia in the last race of the day. At his first two starts this preparation, this son of Exceed And Excel has been beaten by Remarque both times over 1100m and 1200m, however, there is no Remarque in this field today. Blake Shinn will have a task from barrier one over the 1200m in the last race of the day on a rain affected track, but this guy loves the slop and if he can get off the rail or see daylight with more than 200m to go, he will be very hard to beat.
