Rain won’t derail Sydney racing this weekend

Despite the battering Sydney has taken this week both Friday’s Canterbury and Saturday’s Rosehill race cards will go ahead.

THIS weekend’s double header of Sydney racing will go forward as planned despite record rainfall in the harbour city.

Friday night’s Canterbury card and Saturday’s Group 3 Festival Stakes meet at Rosehill will both go ahead on heavy tracks after 60mm of rain in Sydney in recent days.

The Festival Stakes, which grants the winner a ballot exempt spot in Group 2 $250,000 Villiers at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 15 December is the feature event. The winner of the Villiers in turn gets a ballot exemption spot in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap.

Joe Pride’s last-start winner Pecans ($3.80) is the narrow favourite ahead of the Chris Waller-trained My Nordic Hero with online bookmaker Sportsbet in the Festival Stakes market.

The Rosehill Gardens course proper was just into the Heavy 8 range on Thursday morning, with at least one upgrade expected ahead of Saturday.

Friday night’s Canterbury meet is also set to be run on a Heavy 8 after the course was battered with 77mm of rain in 48 hours over Wednesday and Thursday but is also just into the Heavy 8 range.

“The track has drained very well and with some sunshine through Thursday and Friday we would expect good improvement and an upgrade,” Canterbury Park Racecourse Manager Greg Carmody said.
