Hong Kong Derby favourite Waikuku is in doubt to take his place in Sunday’s HK$18 million feature after trainer John Size found the star to be lame in his front left leg on Sunday, March 10.

The gelding has been examined by Size’s allocated Veterinary Surgeon and treated by the Club’s Head Farrier for sensitivity to the sole of its left front foot.

Despite the concerns Waikuku remains the $3.40 favourite alongside Dark Dream at online bookmaker Ladbrokes for Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby.

The Hong Kong Stewards have spoken with Mr Size who said that due to the left front foot issue the horse had missed one day of track work (Sunday, 10 March 2019) and that Waikuku had been restricted to slow work since the issue arose.

Size said that it is his intention to gallop the horse tomorrow morning (Thursday, 14 March 2019).

Waikuku has today been examined by Dr P Curl, Executive Manager, Veterinary Regulation and Welfare, who reported that the horse trotted sound with no additional findings of significance.

An official statement from the Hong Kong Jockey Club on whether or not Waikuku is expected to take his place in the Hong Kong Derby is expected in the coming days.
