The Quokka held over 1200m at Ascot Racecourse is a new slot race, that will be raced under special conditions.
The inaugural running of The Quokka was run on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at weight-for-age level.
Held on the same day as the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate, The Quokka Raceday is without a doubt the highlight event during the WA Autumn Carnival.
The Quokka field is open to 14 slot holders at a cost of $200,000 each, with slot holders getting to choose their horse for the race.
The Quokka is the first time that Western Australia has ventured into a slot-style race, with Racing and Wagering WA lookinf to shake up their Autumn carnival and make it more attractive for big-name stables and horses.
Joining the likes of The Everest ($15 million) and the All-Star Mile ($5 million), The Quokka is without a doubt going to attract some of the best sprinters, vying for the $5 million on offer.

The Western Australians have put an interesting spin on the slot race, though, as The Quokka is just one part of a tri-code racing festival.
The Quokka will be a thoroughbred racing slot race, and it will run on the same weekend as a harness racing version called The Nullabor, which will be a $1 million dollar 2536m pacing feature to be run at Gloucester Park the night prior.
There is also a greyhound slot race to complement this, the $500,000 Sandgroper, which will be run over 520m under lights at Cannington, also held the night prior to The Quokka.
The three-race series has been named the Western Trilogy and is the first time all three codes have combined for a series of races in Australia.

3rd – Oscar’s Fortune (+120)
Recent ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes winners
- In a déjà vu moment reminiscent of last year’s showdown, Saturday’s The Quokka (1200m) saw the familiar sight of the Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass outlasting local sensation Amelia’s Jewel to clinch consecutive victories in the feature at Ascot, now boasting an increased purse of $5 million, up by $1 million from the previous year. Guided once again by Josh Parr, the five-year-old progeny of Vancouver exhibited his trademark tenacity, surging resolutely within the final 100m to stave off the persistent challenge from Simon Miller’s contender, securing triumph by a margin of 0.9 lengths. Oscar’s Fortune trailed closely behind, claiming third place by a mere 0.2 lengths.
- The Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass held off the fast-finishing Amelia’s Jewel to claim the inaugural edition of The Quokka. Having set a breakneck tempo out in front, the NSW-based Overpass kept finding under urgings from Josh Parr to hold off three-year-old filly Amelia’s Jewel by the barest of margins. Baker had opted to bypass the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes on Day 1 of The Championships at Randwick on a heavy surface with Overpass, instead opting to keep him fresh for Saturday’s $4.5 million race at Ascot. Overpass managed to kick clear in the home straight, but was left vulnerable inside the final 50m with Simon Miller’s Amelia’s Jewel coming from last to provide a grandstand finish. Ciaron Maher & David Eustace’s Bella Nipotina made her run with Amelia’s Jewel, but could finish no better than third, whilst Henry Dwyer’s Asfoora stuck on for fourth having gone toe-to-toe with Overpass in running. However, it was all honours the winner with Overpass netting connections $2 million for his win.
