A field of 13 quality fillies and mares has been assembled for this year’s Queen of the Turf. Run over the mile, this Group 1 race has a hefty prize purse of $1 million and has attracted four Group 1 winners, including star mare, Probabeel who will run favourite. Colette tasted Group 1 success on this day last year in the ATC Oaks and she lines up second favourite here. There will be enough speed in this to set it up for backmarkers, with Greysful Glamour, Odeum, Nimalee and Vangelic all speedy types.

It is incredibly hard and optimistic to go past top weight Probabeel especially under weight-for-age conditions. The four-year-old mare won the Epsom Handicap at this track and distance in the Spring, and has since won another Group 1 against the boys too. Back against her own sex and with level weights to nine other mares in the race, she should simply be too good. Kerrin McEvoy knows this star mare very well and they map to get the perfect run from barrier six just off the tempo. She is one of the bets of the day at Randwick on Saturday.

Nimalee has been somewhat disrespected by the market at double figures, given she has won well in her two runs this campaign, including a tough win in the Emancipation at Rosehill last start. Matthew Smith has this mare flying and this has been the target all prep so we expect her to be peaking third-up and up to the mile where she has never missed the place. From barrier nine, Rachel King will take her forward to be outside the first couple, which should see her well and truly within striking distance by the business end.

The other class mare of the field is James Cummings’ Colette. The four-year-old mare won the Oaks on this day last year and then went on to win the Golden Eagle in the Spring before resuming with a win in the Apollo Stakes over Kolding and Verry Elleegant which reads well. James McDonald will be doing the steering from barrier 12 which is a slight concern, and the track probably isn’t going to be wet enough for her so there are a few question marks surrounding her. She does have the ability to win this and she is classy enough so you can’t leave her out of your numbers.
