Punt Drunk: You had one job Avoca… just the one!

Punt Drunk Daily – 21/3/21

Well, that was a strange old day wasn’t it? We all went to bed on Friday night hopeful that the Golden Slipper meeting at Rosehill would go ahead, but as is always the case in Sydney with a big sporting event, the weather came and washed it all away. For some strange reason, Racing NSW has opted to push the meeting back until next Saturday with all feature races going back a week in their own rights. Now, we understand that they would not have had many other options, but imagine a Tuesday afternoon Golden Slipper? Would you still have bet on it? We know we would have. Good ol’ PVL, he always has to get his way.

Mount Popa Gets The Golden Ticket!

What a 24 hours it was for the Hawkes team, and the Wizard from the West William Pike. The combo proved too strong on Friday night when pairing up with Masked Crusader when taking out the William Reid Stakes. Then the same combination headed down to the Mornington Peninsula yesterday afternoon in a bid to get the classy Mount Popa into the Caulfield Cup by taking out the Mornington Cup. Boy, did Mount Popa get that done in style, under another perfect steer from the Wiz, Mount Popa gave nothing else a chance when going all the way in the 2021 Mornington Cup. Once he got the job done at Mornington, online bookmakers were quick to install him as a $15 favourite for the Caulfield Cup. Let’s be honest, that is one of the craziest overreactions we have ever seen. Mount Popa is good, but favourite for one of the best staying races this country has? It is a no from us at the point in time.

You had one job Avoca!

Avoca, a race club in Victoria hosts two meetings each and every year. Their Cup day on Caulfield Cup day and a race meeting during the autumn. Now we will be the first to admit that we have made plenty of mistakes in the past, but placing the barriers 100m too far for a race is something we certainly have not done. Race 2 on Saturday afternoon was supposed to be run over 1100m, yet they jumped from the 1200m mark! Like WTF? A $5.50 chance in Kerioth demolished its rivals, whilst the $1.70 favourite went unplaced. Officially the race was declared a “no race” but Sportsbet made sure to reward their punters who backed Kerioth by paying out the Osborne-trained runner as the winner.

Punt Drunk’s Best Bet Of The Day

The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Divine Rule has three runner up performances in her past four starts and has not been beaten far at all in the process. The filly will be aided from barrier one and with Daniel Stackhouse on board she should not be far from the speed throughout the running. If Stacky can get Divine Rule in a bit of clear air at the top of the straight, then watch out.
