Ballarat Race Betting Preview – March, 21

A big nine race card is set to be run and won at Ballarat on Sunday afternoon, where the track has come up a Good 4 for racing. With clear skies forecast, and the rail out 4m from the 600m to the winning post and then true the remainder, we are set for a cracking day of racing at Ballarat. The first at the ‘Rat is set to jump at 12:35pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Salto’s Angel

Eight career starts, for five runner up performances usually would read as solid enough form to get the job done for a Sunday afternoon maiden. We expect that to be the case with the Danny O’Brien-trained Salto Angel who was quite disappointing last time out over at the mile here at Ballarat. Despite running second on that occasion, her previous form suggested she should have been too good for that fillies and mares maiden, but alas she could do no better than second. Stepping up to the 2000m third up looks to be the right recipe this time though, as her only third up run was in the Oaks trial in the spring when finishing second. She is the clear class runner in the race and with a genuine enough tempo, she should be too strong late for this lot.

Best BetRace 4 – Salto’s Angel (#13) $1.80 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Zorro’s Dream

If we are brave enough to be with Salto Angel early on in the card, then we are equally as brave with the Mitchell Freedman-trained Zorro’s Dream. Having been held up at a crucial stage at Bendigo on March 3, Zorro’s Dream could do no better than a second place finish behind a smart one, despite letting down nicely once balanced up and in the clear. The runner that beat him at Bendigo franked that form when winning at Sandown during the week. The inform Dean Yendall hops onboard for the first time, and from barrier four expect the pair to settle closer to the speed. If there is a genuine enough tempo over the 1100m then Zorro’s Dream will be far too strong for them late on in this piece.

Best Value: Excuses Excuses

Coming off a five week freshen up, the Paul Preusker-trained Excuses Excuses looks well placed to put up consecutive wins after breaking through for his maiden win last time out. The win at Bendigo on February 13 was backed up by the runner up coming out and winning its next start. Considering Excuses Excuses was doing his best work late over the 1300m, the step up to 1400m looks ideal third up from a spell.

Next BestRace 6 – Excuses Excuses (#2) $8.00 with Sportsbet
