Well, that was a tough one punters. Trekking went around Ascot like he would prefer to be sunbaking on the Swan River. It was a tough day to find a winner at Rosehill on a stinking hot day and with Jadentom the ultimate get out at Doomben settling for third you would have done well to finish in front. Punt Drunk readers did get some coin back in their kit with our Punt Drunk Best Bet Alleboom saluting at $2.50 on what was a tough day around the country.

Brad Rawiller’s Move West Pays Off

In what is quickly becoming a theme where jockeys vacate Victoria now that the borders are re-opening; the veteran jockey packed his bags and headed West for an opportunity to claim some of WA’s major races. He managed to do that in fine style yesterday when he partnered Elite Street to Group 1 success in the Winterbottom Stakes. Hot favourite Trekking was nowhere to be seen when the whips were cracking, and it was Daniel Morton’s four-year-old gelding who used to be raced under the name “Out In The Street”, who took advantage of that to claim his first Group 1 at big odds at just his eighth start.

Coffey Roasts His Competition

Harry Coffey was one of the sports most in-form jockeys at the start of the year where it felt like he was reeling winners off for fun on the country circuit. But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit his career was at the crossroads, he suffers from cystic fibrosis and based on medical advice he was forced to be on the sidelines throughout. He returned to metro racing in fine fashion where he booted home the Daniel Bowman trained Ocean Beyond in one of the feature races at The Valley. He told Racing.com that when Bowman asked him to come and trial the horse, that he wasn’t too keen on the drive to Warrnambool (I mean, who would be?) but yesterday showed it was well worth the drive.

Today’s Japan Cup A Cracker

Has there ever been a better three horse trio facing a starter in recent history than the three that line up in the Japan Cup?

Almond Eye, Contrail and Daring Tact will battle it out with 12 other runners in the race that is worth almost $8.5 million Aussie. According to good mate “Thommo” and his back of beer coaster maths – that’s about 650 Billion in local coin over there. On the punt, there is next to nothing separating the top three in the market and so best you grab a cold one at around 5:40pm AEDT to watch some of the best international gallopers do their best work. Just pray the muppets at Sky racing don’t split screen the race with some Swedish snow trot debacle on the Sky bin channel.

How Bloody Good Is The Harrovian?

If you could own any horse other than the peoples favourite wet tracker Jungle Edge, it would have to be The Harrovian? The North QLD superstar has made successive trips to city racing in Brisbane and has come away with the chocolates on all three occasions. Yesterday’s win was his tenth win in succession and in the process picked up his first Stakes win despite drifting significantly in the market. Not even a change in trainer could hold him back, although not sure the “ex trainer” Steve Massingham has let go of the reins yet. He self reported for a last minute flight to Brissy to be trackside for the 10th “bang” in a row.
