Punt Drunk: Son of American Pharaoh turns heads at Warwick Farm

Head Of State

Punt Drunk racing news – 11/2/21

We hope you all had a winning day on the punt yesterday as we build to another big weekend in Australian horse racing. With only four meetings to get involved in today, it means we have to make our mark early, so make sure to check out our best bet of the day and our top tips for Doomben and Pakenham.

Son of a gun could be a star

Any doubts the Chris Waller stable had about the son of American Pharaoh are surely eased following yesterday’s dominant victory in the opener at Warwick Farm. Going around at $1.60, Head Of State duly saluted and made favourite punters around the country quite happy early on. Even happier will be those with interests in the two-year-old colt, as he is the first galloper by American Pharaoh to run outside of the Northern Hemisphere. Waller said after the race that Head Of State had a Group 1 in him, whether it is the Sires-Champagne or even a Guineas prep. He is one to watch going forward, and if he is half of what his dad was, boy, are we in for a treat!

A year is a long time racing

Remember Alligator Blood? The Queensland superstar was a tough winner in the CS Hayes Stakes this time last year when he and Catalyst battled it out in one of the best races we have seen in some time. Well, since then David Vandyke has given him the flick like a bad one-night stand, while a spinal injury has threatened a premature end to his racing career. But connections made sure to keep their faith, getting the ‘Gator back to full health and to a stable that can get the best out of their horses. Now with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team, the formerly disqualified Magic Millions Guineas winner has been given the all clear to begin the build up to a winter preparation, ironically based in Queensland. Imagine the scenes if the Gator wins a Group 1 from under the nose of Vandyke? God, we are all for that!

Glamour still defying the odds

How, in this day and age, is Greysful Glamour fourth on the voting list for the 2021 All Star Mile? The owners have clearly launched a campaign that ol’ mate Trumpy would be jealous of, but not too dissimilar to what Mr Money Bags’ connections provided in the inaugural All Star Mile. She has more votes than Queensland icon The Harrovian, NZ wonder mare Probabeel, SA cult hero Regalo Di Gaetano, and a likely type called Russian Camelot. That is some achievement in itself. If the track is wet, this could all be a waste of time, as the Glamour is 0/13 on rain-affected tracks… and we all know how reliable Melbourne weather is, don’t we?
