Punt Drunk: Sir Dragonet wants it wet for C.F. Orr Stakes

Punt Drunk racing news

Punt Drunk Racing News – February 04, 2021

G’day punters and welcome back to another edition of Punt Drunk. We have five race meetings to keep us going today, kicking off at 1:15pm with the first at Gosford and wrapping up at 9:30pm with the last at Pakenham. How bloody good is that? Oh, and it’s Friday tomorrow, so life doesn’t get much better than this, does it? Well, it does, with the field for the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes being released yesterday, signifying we are only two days away from Group 1 racing!

Sir Dragonet the fave but no certainty to start

Glen Boss acted like he had just received a bloody good time after hoping off Sir Dragonet at a trial last week, claiming he’s the best he has ridden in 10 years. The 2020 Cox Plate winner has been accepted for Saturday’s C.F. Orr Stakes and has been installed as a $3 favourite. There is supposed to be a torrential downpour in Melbourne on Friday that could leave the Caulfield track in the Heavy or Soft range, in which case Sir Dragonet will run. But considering the track copped 50mm last Friday and came up as a Soft 5 on race-day morning, there are fears the surface may be back into the Good range by the time the Group 1 is run and won. If that is the case, Sir Dragonet will be scratched. Imagine that, Bossy doing his best work in the wet… who would have thought?

A Currie or a Wizard?

No, this isn’t a “would you rather” segment, but with the recent lockdown in Perth, William Pike would have a few nerves in regards to his booking of Arcadia Queen in the All Star Mile next month. If Victoria still deems Perth a COVID hotspot, Pike may be stranded in Perth while Arcadia Queen goes around as favourite in the $5 million race. Never fear, though, as Luke Currie is here to save the day! He did it in the Mackinnon Stakes during the spring when Pikey headed home after Oaks Day to quarantine ahead of the Perth Racing Carnival. Now, there’s no doubt we’d love to see Pikey over here for the Autumn Carnival, but geez, connections have it sweet with Currie ready to hop aboard if required.

Our new favourite Hilal

How bloody good was Hilal in the opener on the Kenso track yesterday? We quickly threw out our HSP because Hilal became our new favourite. You would have thought he was in a near-impossible position to go on to win. The colt only had one horse behind him when turning and was on the rails with plenty of rump in front of him. The way he unleashed a turn of foot when he balanced up showed he is a smart colt with plenty of upside. He was $101 in the Golden Slipper prior to that debut, and he has since shortened to $34 with online bookmakers. Could he run down Enthaar?

Punt Drunk’s Best Bet of the Day

Delexo was nothing short of dominant on debut when winning by nearly three lengths at Wyong over 1000m. The son of Exosphere stays at the same distance here and goes around at Gosford, which is a similar style of track to Wyong and will no doubt suit him. Drawn in barrier six, he should kick up and be in a handy spot throughout. If he can let down with the same acceleration in the straight, he should be very hard to get past. He won all three of his trials prior to his debut victory, so he clearly loves winning, and Ashley Morgan knows the horse well. He can go back-to-back here.

GosfordRace 4 – Delexo (#3) $3.20 with Sportsbet
