Pakenham racing preview – February 2, 2021
Pakenham is set to host an eight-race card on Thursday night as the night racing season continues for another week. The track has come up a Soft 5 and the rail is out 6m throughout, but we should still see a competitive night of racing. Every runner will get their chance in the long home straight, so there will be no excuses for fancied runners. The first at Pakenham is set to jump at 6pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Office Jim
The Anthony Freedman-trained Office Jim showed plenty of heart when going down by a neck at Pakenham a fortnight ago. In that race he settled just off the leader’s heels and was subsequently headed early on in the straight by the eventual winner, Moeen, yet he kept finding throughout the home straight and lost no admirers. With the track expected to stay in the Soft range, his record in the wet has him in this race right up to his neck. He has six starts on rain-affected going, with two wins and three second-place finishes, and looks well placed to bring up his second win of the campaign on Thursday night.

Next Best: Northeast Express
It is not everyday you have a horse in a 2500m maiden at Pakenham on a Thursday night that we are quite keen on. However, the Kevin Corstens-trained Northeast Express has finished second in three of his last five runs and has been knocking on the door in recent times. He loomed as the winner at Geelong on January 27 before finding one better late on in the piece to go down by a neck. He comes into this off a short eight-day break, and with Daniel Stackhouse retaining the ride they should be hard to beat as a nice bank builder early on the Pakenham card.

Best Value: Jay Gatsby
Simply put a line through Jay Gatsby’s first-up effort at The Valley, as he never got into a position any better than three wide with no cover and just couldn’t go on with the job. If he brings his form from his debut campaign, he should be fighting out the finish here. The Dabernig & Hayes three-year-old finished no worse than third in his juvenile season and proved he can handle the sting out of the ground. He is a must have in any quaddies on Thursday night, because his best is good enough to win this.
