Punt Drunk: Realm Of Flowers hot favourite to win Melbourne Cup

Punt Drunk 16/5/21

What a big day of Group 1 racing that was! Eduardo claimed the Doomben 10,000 which was his second Group 1 success in three starts, whilst Savatoxl caused a massive upset in The Goodwood when saluting at 20/1 when smashing his rivals at Morphettville. With the Adelaide Racing Carnival coming to a close yesterday, all eyes will head north for the remainder of the QLD Winter Carnival. Anyone up for a trip north? Few Group 1’s, Doomben and Eagle Farm! Could think of worse places to be! (We’re looking at you Mornington racecourse).

One Too Many?

Ok, we love Group 1 racing as much as anyone, heck we just love a punt! But, two Group 1 1200m sprints on the same day in what is the “off-season” for racing is just ludicrous. Five runners from The Everest of 2020 ran in two separate Group 1 events on the same day, it is just simply pointless. Group 1 racing is supposed to be the best of the best competing against each, not just some of the best. It leaves the likes of Gytrash and Behemoth in Adelaide and Eduardo and Trekking up north in QLD. Sure a roughie took out The Goodwood, but imagine the spectacle if there was one sprint race yesterday for Group 1 honours. Or does that make too much sense?

Overreaction #10678

Online bookmakers and punters alike are proned to plenty of stupid things let’s be honest. Take yesterday afternoon for example, Realm Of Flowers pissed in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes by about 60 lengths. Well you would think so based on how quickly the Anthony Freedman-trained mare tightened for this year’s Melbourne Cup. As we know, if you win the Ramsden you’re in the Cup. But, once the race had been given the all clear Realm Of Flowers was now an $18 for the Melbourne Cup. The same price as last year’s winner Twilight Payment and the ever consistent Prince Of Arran, as well as Explosive Jack. It was her first win since the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic 12 months today. Imagine that…..she is an equal second favourite. That will do us.

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

The Scott Brunton and David Pires combination go together like peas and carrot. They will be looking to make it three wins on the bounce with Sir Da Vinci in what shapes to be a match race between he and Stormount. From barrier two, we expect Pires to use barrier two to his advantage, “jump on the bunny” and be too strong for them out in front over the 2100m.

Hobart – Race 1 Sir Da Vinci (#2) $2.30 with Sportsbet
