Punt Drunk: Peters goes full boomer over Perth lockdown

Punt Drunk racing news – February 2, 2021

Good morning, punters, and welcome to another edition of Punt Drunk – the only article you will read where there is no bullshit, just genuine opinions and a good laugh. We love a beer, and boy, do we love a punt on a Stony Creek maiden on a Tuesday afternoon. Group 1 racing isn’t too far away, and we will make sure to tip you into plenty of winners throughout the week to build the bank for the black-type racing coming up.

Peters not impressed with WA lockdown

Perth goes into lockdown, and everyone loses their mind! The West Australians were supposed to be better than everyone on the east coast at controlling the pandemic, weren’t they? Well, legendary owner Bob Peters is far from impressed with the recent lockdown rulings. His star duo of Arcadia Queen and Regal Power were both set to begin their autumn campaigns with a jump out yesterday morning at Belmont, but those trials were all postponed. Peters went as far as to say that their preparations were “completely messed up”, with the pair now expected to jump out in Western Australia next week at sometime before hopping on a plane to Melbourne for a big Autumn Carnival. While it would indeed be shit if the two stars went into their first-up runs without a trial, they should be fine considering it is only a five-day lockdown and not six months. Yes, it’s put a bump in their plans, but ol’ mate Peters is carrying on like a boomer!

A Surprise in the All Star Mile?

Three months ago, Surprise Baby somehow went around as favourite in the Melbourne Cup. Despite a poor run in the Turnbull Stakes, punters thought she was the one to beat, yet he could do no better than 13th. Well, trainer Paul Preusker has sung the horse’s praises over the past couple of days, saying he has put on plenty of weight while grazing in a good paddock (as so many of us have done). On a more serious note, you will be hard pressed to find a more spoken-about fifth than what Surprise Baby managed in the 2019 Melbourne Cup. Preusker is looking to get his potential star into the All Star Mile but is sitting quite a distance back in votes from the top 10. Having been the favourite in the race that stops the nation, you would think RV stewards would give him a wildcard to the race and everything will be hunky dory! But it is the RV stewards we are talking about. Remember that dead heat from the weekend… Still too soon?
