Punt Drunk: Classique Legend flops in Hong Kong Sprint

Punt Drunk horse racing news & views

Ah Monday, how we despise you. We wake up, get ready to go to work, and realise it’s not even close to Friday yet. For many punters, this is the last working week of the year, which is a blessing for some. But to those still working, we know how excited you are for those days off ahead.

We’ll get you up to date with Classique Legend’s first-up flop, a Coongy Cup winner heading for an All Star Mile run, plus a maiden win that has to be seen to be believed.

Nothing legendary about Classique’s HK debut

The Everest winner from earlier in the spring, Classique Legend, had his first race start in Hong Kong on Sunday in the featured Hong Kong Sprint. He was an alarming drifter having opened up as a $2 favourite on race day, but he ended up jumping closer to $4 odds. From barrier one it was always going to be a tricky assignment, but to be beaten as far as he was doesn’t exactly show the class he’s renowned for. The featured sprint was taken out by Danon Smash at big odds ($21) as UK jockey Ryan Moore claimed consecutive Group 1 wins.

Nonconformist set for All Star Mile tilt

The Group 3 Coongy Cup winner Nonconformist is set to join the likes of Behemoth and Mystic Journey in the running for an All Star Mile slot. The gelding out of the Graeme Begg stable is no stranger to Moonee Valley, where he won the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes back in March this year over 2040m. His best certainly has him pushing for a place chance, but he does look like he’ll be a little out of his depth, in our most humble opinion.

Huge win for Galactic Warrior in Canberra

If you can find the replay of Race 4 at Canberra on Sunday, please make sure you’re sitting down, as the debut win by Galactic Warrior is one that will blow your socks off. He had been heavily ridden at the 200m mark and looked to be going as good as we are on a Sunday morning after a few bevvies the night before. He was going up and down on the spot, but something clicked and the three-year-old pulled the pants down of his rivals with a slick final 200m. We want to know how many punters screwed up their ticket and went bin diving after they crossed the line. Be honest!
