Punt Drunk: All Star Mile loses yet another big name

Verry Elleegant

Punt Drunk racing news – 12/2/2021

Thank f**k it’s Friday! We are only one more sleep away from the best day of the week, and we have built up a nice bank to launch into Bivouac tomorrow in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. It has been a big 24 hours in the racing industry, so let’s take a look at some of the top stories doing the rounds.

No All Star Mile for Verry Elleegant

Verry Elleegant has been pulled out of contention for the All Star Mile next month, with connections opting to keep the six-time Group 1 winner in Sydney to have a crack at the Ranvet Stakes instead. There were talks late last year that the Arc over in France was the main target for the 2020 Caulfield Cup winner, but it remains to be seen if Chris Waller sends her over there after her autumn campaign. It now means that Tassie’s own Still A Star and the popular Mr Quickie are left to fight it out for the last spot in the All Star Mile field, with only 150 votes separating the two.

A debut to remember at Pakenham

How bloody good was the debut of Marabi? The four-year-old mare made the wait worthwhile when coming within a bees appendage of breaking Clarice Cliffs’ track record of 1.10.6 when clocking a 1.10.77 last night at Pakenham. It’s safe to say she did not beat much, but a win by six lengths on debut is nothing to be laughed at and we can’t wait to see where she steps out next.

Fighting Harada returns in style

On top of Marabi’s win at Pakenham last night, it was so good to see Fighting Harada back on the race track. The horse was last seen in the 2018 Caulfield Guineas Prelude and has since endured some amazing setbacks, but he came out and smashed his rivals last night. Remember what 2018 was like, punters? No masks, no social distancing, and the scariest thing in the world was Trumpy’s Twitter account. Ah, how the times have changed!
