2024 Premier’s Cup result

2nd – Touristic (+100)
3rd – Super Strike (+150)
Recent Premier’s Cup winners
- Eliyass ($2.20) returned to the racetrack with a tough win in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott yard, holding off the fast-finishing Touristic ($6.50) in the final stages of the race. Tim Clark settled the race favourite in the box seat behind the leaders, Canberra Legend ($9.50) and Cleveland ($9.00), but once the field hit the home turn, Clark extricated off the fence to make his run. It took the son of Le Havre a few strides before he hit top speed, allowing Super Strike ($11.00) and Touristic to close in before the 200m mark. The Peter Snowden-trained runner let down with a strong finish to chase down the leader; however, Eliyass dug deep and prove the superior stayer over the 2000m journey.
- Jason Collett and Mark Minervini have combined with Hosier ($5) taking out the Group 3 Premier’s Cup at Randwick. It was a reward for consistency as the now six-year-old gelding headed into Saturday fourth-up into the preparation, finishing off nicely over the shorter trips. He clearly relished getting over the 2000m for the first time in the campaign, as Jason Collett manufactured a perfect ride from barrier five, placing Hosier in the one-one position throughout the contest. The money had come for the son of Camelot throughout the week, opening as much as $11 with some online bookmakers on Wednesday afternoon. The money was spot on as you only wanted to be on one horse turning for home, as Hosier let-down the middle of the course to score a dominant 1.2-length victory. The race was set-up nicely for the back markers, with Mach Schnell ($18) going at a genuine clip, seeing the likes of Military Mission ($41) and Bois D’Argent ($14) make good inroads late, while 2023 Sydney Cup favourite Cleveland ($17) was impressive on resumption.
- Having claimed the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) two starts prior, the Bjorn Baker-trained Arapaho added the Group 3 Premier’s Cup to a somewhat underrated career record. Sent around as a $21 chance, Arapaho was seemingly up against it, but under a well-timed steer from Rachel King, arrived in time to get the better of Chris Waller’s Francesco Guardi and Lord Ardmore in impressive style. The victory handed Baker and King a second straight win in the race, having partnered Harpo Marx to glory in the race 12 months prior.
- Despite not thinking too highly of Harpo Marx when the import arrived at his stable, Bjorn Baker’s opinion had well and truly changed when he claiming his first stakes success in the relocated Premier’s Cup. Held at Kembla Grange due to Covid-19 restrictions, Harpo Marx relished the track conditions and a significant weight drop from his last start, to finish strongly under Ms Rachel King and down fellow Spirit Ridge ($4.80) by a head. Inverloch ($10) was another three-quarters of a length away in third.
- Trainer Kris Lees believes Mugatoo has the scope to reach Group One level during the spring and pinpointed the Metropolitan Handicap as a likely goal following the import’s dominant win in the Premier’s Cup. The staying import took his record to two wins from as many starts this campaign with the classy victory, coming from the rear of the field under Kerrin McEvoy. Mugatoo started a popular $1.90 favourite and finished strongly to down Sikandarabad ($10) by 1.25 lengths with Herengawe ($81) a close third.
- The Chris Waller-trained Wu Gok confirmed his status as a genuine wet-tracker, claiming his first Stakes success in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup. Waller had a heavy hand in the Group 3 event for stayers, with training seven of the 10 horses engaged, which resulted in him training the first five horses past the winning post. Wu Gok ($6.50) kept his new stablemate, former Perth horse Come Play With Me ($3.20) at bay by a length, with Tommy Berry producing an expert ride on the leader’s back throughout and pinching an inside run along the rails. The move proved to be a decisive one, with Wu Gok finding plenty late on.
