A field of 10 mares will do battle in the Group 3 Pam O’Neill Stakes over the mile at Doomben. Running for $150,000, the Magic Millions Open Quality winner Paradee will head the weights and the market as a $3.80 chance, ahead of Nudge, La Gai Soleil (both $5) and Yamazaki ($6). Paradee is likely to cross over and have a forward showing, while Greysful Glamour will use her low draw to boot through and lead the field in what is her swansong. Horsebetting.com.au presents our Pam O’Neill Stakes tips and $100 betting strategy.

2021 Pam O’Neill Stakes betting preview

Paradee was brilliant over the Summer, winning three straight races and then finishing fourth in the Group 1 Australian Cup, only 1.3 lengths off Homesman and Best of Days. The Danny O’Brien-trained mare was originally set to go around in the Hollindale Stakes a fortnight ago, but was instead saved for this which was a fair push in our opinion. The four-year-old daughter of Epaulette has won first-up in the past and has a terrific record over the 1600m journey and should be ultra-competitive in this. Craig Williams knows the mare well and will do the steering from barrier 10 which should see her trailing Greysful Glamour and be well within striking distance come the final stages of the race. Paradee will be hard to beat here.

Nudge has been on our radar for a while, despite not winning since VRC Oaks Day in 2019. Consistently in the money, Nudge has placed at her last three starts. The Chris Waller-trained mare has been unlucky with barriers two runs deep this preparation. Two starts back Nudge was ready for a 1600m test, but didn’t have enough of a sprint left in her to beat subsequent Group 3 winner Rocha Clock. Nudge’s most recent second came at the hands of Brandenburg in the inaugural running of the $500,000 The Coast at Gosford, and he is one of the market fancies in the Group 1 Doomben Cup later in the day, so that form all ties in well. At the mile again, Nudge has drawn wide in barrier nine, so she will have her work cut out under Kerrin McEvoy, but she still should be running home strongly as always.

We are pretty confident the market has it right; we cannot see much else outside of the top three fancies troubling the judge, so we have to include La Gai Soleil in the mix. The John O’Shea-trained four-year-old has won five of nine starts and placed a further two occasions, proving a consistent type. La Gai Soleil resumed this campaign with a classy win at Warwick Farm, beating Animate and Cristal Breeze, who went on to win the Provincial Championship Final at her next start, which we think is good form for the Pam O’Neill. Next start she finished a narrow second to Lina’s Hero on Anzac Day on the Kensington track, and while favourite backers were left disappointed, her run was full of merit given the difficulty to make ground that day. Barrier eight will see her towards the rear alongside Nudge, but with James McDonald on she should be able to overcome that and be right there at the end.
