Feature Race Race 5: Lord Reims Day (2600m)
First Race 12:22pm ACDT

Racing returns to the course proper at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon where the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes is the feature event of the day. Horsebetting’s South Australian form analyst has combed through the card and found a couple of best bets for the day. The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail returning to the true position for the first time since November 27, 2021 meaning the inside four lanes may prove the place to be early on.

Racing is scheduled to commence at 12:22pm ACDT (12:52pm AEDT) with a BM86 over 1600m.

Lord Reims Stakes Top Tip – Hasta La War

The Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes field for 2022 looks to be one of the weakest in recent years and the Sue Murphy-trained Hasta La War looks the clear top tip in the race. Having ran within two lengths of Delphi and a length to The Chosen One in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes in the spring, he clearly has the strongest form lines coming into a race like this. He returned from a four-month spell when finishing fifth behind Wycliff in the Premier’s Plate over 2037m but looks much better suited over 2600m. Despite only having one minor placing from four second-up runs, the six-year-old bay gelding should be winning this on talent alone. We expect Hasta La War to put a decent gap on his rivals on his way to a run in the Adelaide Cup.

Morphettville Best Bet – Pegasi

We need to be patient for our best bet of the day on Saturday, as the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Pegasi steps out over 1050m in the final event of the day. Having not won since his debut win over the Group-quality Lightsaber in January last year, the three-year-old Star Turn gelding has consistently been racing in tougher races than what he strikes on Saturday. From barrier five and with apprentice Madison Lloyd on board, the bay gelding looks to be the natural leader on paper. With Lloyd’s 3kg claim, he will go around with just 57.5kg on his back and under a well-rated ride should go one better than his narrow defeat over 1100m when first-up on February 12. The $3.80 on offer from Palmerbet is more than good enough for us.

Next Best Bet at Morphettville – Sharwin

Following a dominant second-up win at Pakenham on January 20, the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Sharwin comes to the Morphettville 1200m looking to make it a third win in four career starts. Todd Pannell will need to be aggressive from the barrier (7) on Saturday with the three-year-old Astern filly looking to lead the field throughout and running her rivals into the ground. Her only faulter came when needing to sprint off a slow speed, so look for Pannell to have the field strung out approaching the home corner and with a kick in the home straight, Sharwin should prove too quick for this lot. The $2.80 quote from Ladbrokes looks a great price.

Best Value Bet at Morphettville – The Map

Despite failing to get the job done first-up from a five-month spell, the Dan Clarken & Oopy MacGillvray-trained The Map steps up to the mile having hit the line nicely over 1250m when fresh on February 5. The three-year-old Alpine Eagle filly will be giving her rivals a start approaching the home turn, but as she showed when resuming she has a nice turn of foot and was only getting warm late. With Antarctic Ocean looking to make this a genuinely run affair, it should set the race up nicely for a swooper like The Map to finish over the top of her rivals and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.
