Race 1 – 3YO Maiden Plate (1000m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_01]

The opening event on the Morphettville card sees a short-priced favourite Fall On A Star go round for Phillip Stokes, but we are happy to take her on with Perfect Zed. The Peter Hardacre-trained Toronado showed in her debut campaign that she is a filly with a bit of upside and despite still being a maiden after three starts we are taking with confidence. At her only first up run she did plenty of things wrong when on debut at Warrnambool and drove hard late to just miss by a nose. It shows that she comes to hand quickly and with superior race manners on Saturday she looks to be the one to be with in the opening event.

Selections: 9-6-3-5

Race 2 – BM78 (1000m)

Best Value Bet

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_02]

Our best value bet of the day comes up early on the Morphettville card, when the returning Trip for David Jolly runs first up from a five month spell. We are a massive fan of the mare out of Good Journey as she tends to make her own luck out in front, and from barrier six Todd Pannell should find the front with relative ease. With just 56kg on her back she gets in well at the weights, just 2kg above the minimum and in a race with plenty of potential leaders expect for Pannell to have her leading the field up in a bid to break their hearts.

Selections: 4-1-5-2

Race 3 – BM78 (1300m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_03]

The third event on the card looks to be one of the harder races to narrow down on the Morphettville program. We have settled on the John Salanitri-trained Just A Tribute, who just two runs back was competing in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on VRC Derby Day last year. She returned in decent enough fashion at Pakenham on April 4 to suggest she will be competitive here and with Michael Dee retaining the ride, they do rate quite highly. Expect Dee to settle the Street Boss gelding midfield, and when asked for an effort he will be savaging the line with intent.

Selections: 9-7-1-4

Race 4 – BM68 (1400m)

Next Best Bet

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_04]

One of our best bets on the Morphettville program is Born To Play, who despite being well beaten at Oakbank looks hard to go past here. The Redoute’s Choice mare was no match for the eventual winner, however she ran on nicely to claim second to suggest she will be hard to beat here third up from a spell. The lightly raced four-year-old gets barend Vorster sticking on board and with a well timed run from the second half of the field, there should be no reason why they are not fighting out the finish.

Selections: 11-6-7-8

Race 5 – BM60 (1250m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_05]

The way Johnny Chutzpah broke his maiden at Benalla on March 9 suggests there are a few metro class wins in store for him throughout his career. The Exosphere gelding was badly held up behind the leaders for the first half of the home straight, but once he saw clear galloping air he was able to build through the gears nicely and storm home. Having already seen early market support and with apprentice Will Price hopping onboard with his 2kg claim, we expect Price to have him up on speed and be too strong for them over the 1250m.

Selections: 5-9-1-3

Race 6 – H C Nitschke Stakes (1400m)

Best Bet Of The Day

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_06]

Our best bet of the day comes up in the first leg of the quaddie in the Listed H C Nitschke Stakes. The Mick price-trained Annavisto could not have been any more impressive this campaign with three wins and a second. Her sole defeat came with plenty of excuses and on Saturday she looks too hard to go past at Morphettville. She tends to make her own luck up on speed and with Michael Dee on board expect her to take up the running from barrier six in a race that lacks any other possible leaders. Her last two wins at Bendigo and Caulfield leading into this run have been equally as arrogant and if she brings that form here, good luck catching her.

Selections: 6-8-7-11

Race 7 – City Of Adelaide Handicap

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_07]

Groundswell gave nothing else a chance at Bendigo on March 27, and we are happy to be with him at his third up run here at Morphettville. The Anthony Freedman-trained son of Fastnet Rock has won third-up in the past, and with speed drawn to his outside he looks to get a cart across the front of the field. If he can settle outside the leader of the race we have full faith that he will kick clear at the top of the straight and prove too classy in the Listed City of Adelaide Handicap.

Selections: 2-1-7-9

Race 8 – Breeders’ Stakes

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_08]

One of the featured events on the Morphettville card and is set to be run on the course proper at Morphettville. A field of 11 two-year-olds are set to go around, and it was hard not to like what Isles Of Avalon put together on debut in the Dequetteville Stakes. She draws barrier two for her second career start and should get a lovely trail into the race. With Blaike Macdougall on board, expect them to settle midfield and be savaging the line late.

Selections: 9-6-1-3

Race 9 – Chairman’s Stakes

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1367597_09]

The featured event on the Morphettville card is the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes set to be run and won over 2040m. Victorian form has been the theme of our selections so far, and is set to continue in the final race with the Mick Price-trained Deepstrike. Having strung together two victories to begin his campaign this time in, Price has thrown him into another black-type race after a close up fourth in the Hill Smith Stakes in the spring. His racing pattern of getting back and running means he will require a touch of luck. If he gets that luck it is hard to see him getting beaten and claiming his first Group level success.

Selections: 5-1-8-7
