Morphettville Race betting preview – March 08, 2021
It is Adelaide Cup day at Morphettville on Monday afternoon, where a big nine race card is set down for judgement. The track has come up a Good 4 and with the rail in the true position we will see a cracking day of racing throughout Monday afternoon. Racing is set to get underway at 12:15pm ACDT.
Race 1- Tab Cinderalla Stakes
Kicking off the card at Morphettville on Monday is the listed Cinderella Stakes for the two-year-old fillies over 1050m. With half of the field being debutants we are sticking with the raced brigade, mainly the Lloyd Kennewell trained Sirianni. The filly had plenty of backing on debut at Kilmore on February 25, and only just missed after giving her rivals a near six length head start at the top of the straight. If Jason Holder can settle the Snitzel filly a touch closer to the speed her turn of foot should be good enough to kick start us in style.
Race 1 – Sirianni (#4)Race 2- White Marquee Handicap
Happy to take on the favourite in the second race on Adelaide Cup day and side with the Will Clarken-trained La Richesse. Having been beaten just over three quarters of a length last start by the favourite Unlaced over this track and distance last time out, we expect an improved performance from the Danerich mare. From barrier one look for jockey Todd Panell to head straight to the front from barrier one and with a bit of luck the duo will not be caught in the shadows of the winning post.
Selections: 8-4-7-9
Race 3- Furphy Handicap
Having been competitive in her last three starts in Melbourne, Smokin’ Val returns to South Australia on the back of a 2.5 length fourth in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes. It was an even performance on the back of a tight squeeze turning into the home straight, but from the wide barrier expect Kayla Crowther to settle the filly midfield and be charging over the top of them late on in the piece.
Selections: 6-2-5-4
Race 4- Terry Howe Painting Matrice Stakes
The 2021 Matrice Stakes has attracted a strong albeit small field of seven for the dash over 1200m. It is hard to go past the top three in the market, but with Second Slip having strung together four consecutive victories including three this campaign he is the one we want to be with. Having held out his rivals at Murray Bridge on February 27, we are backing the Will Clarken trained to take up the running from the get go and not be overtaken from pillar to post.
Race 4 – Second Slip (#3)
Best Value Bet Of The Day
Race 5- Canadian Club Handicap
We are backing one at a price as we get to the halfway mark of the card, the David Jolly trained Toff Love third up from a spell. Having not run worse than second when third up from a spell the $9.00 odds that are available look too good to pass up and with a strong record over the 1050m we are expecting a strong performance. Toff Love is a natural get back and run on type of runner, and with a genuine tempo he should be charging over the top of these late.
Race 5 – Toff Love (#6)Race 6- C.S Hayes Memorial Cup
Opening the quaddie on Adelaide Cup day is the CS Hayes Memorial Cup over 1600. Despite being a big Ritratto fan, the $6 on offer for Ironclad who had him well beaten last start looks hard to go by. Having already won twice from to starts on the Morphettville track the Dubawai gelding will look to use barrier one to his advantage throughout the running. With Kerrin McEvoy on board for the first time he looks to be a bit of early value this quaddie needs.
Race 6 – Ironclad (#9)
Best Bet Of The Day
Race 7- TAB Adelaide Cup
The Adelaide Cup is run over 3200m at Group 2 level, and this year’s field has attracted some of Australia’s most honest stayers. However the potential superstar that is Tralee Rose heads the market at flip of the coin odds and looks to be one of the best bets of the week, let alone the program. Her win in the Lord Reims Stakes was arrogant when winning untouched from the rear of the field. A win on Monday might see Tralee Rose quickly become a favourite to take out this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Next Best Bet Of The Day
Race 8- Morphettville Guineas
With a bit of luck Tralee Rose has bolted in the Adelaide Cup and then we can load up on the returning Victoria Quay. Having taken out the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes ahead of the eventual VRC Derby winner in Personal during the spring, it is worth noting that Jamie Kah is her to ride the filly for Tony McEvoy. With speed drawn to her outside we should see a genuine mile being run and with the last look at them, they should be too strong.
Race 8 – Victoria Quay (#8)Race 9- Winning Edge Presentations Handicap
Closing the curtain on Adelaide Cup day is a BM68 over 1200m. With a bit of luck the Ryan Balfour-trained Viduka looks well placed to break a rub of ours. The gelding always manages to find himself wide without cover. On Monday, from barrier 7 under Will Price we are backing him to settle up on speed and be strong long late on.
Selections: 4-11-7-1
