Mornington preview

What Mornington Races
Where Mornington Racecourse – 320 Racecourse Rd, Mornington VIC 3931
When Monday, June 12, 2023
First Race 12:25pm AEST

The traditional Public Holiday meeting at Mornington this time for the King’s Birthday is set to greet punters on Monday afternoon where a competitive eight-race program is scheduled. Following plenty of rain in Melbourne’s South-East, the track has come up a Heavy 8 at the time of acceptances, whilst the rail comes out 4m the entire circuit which suggests the track may favour those up on speed.

The first of eight races is set to jump at 12:25pm AEST.

Best Bet at Mornington: Immortality

Despite not being seen at a racetrack since October 2021, Immortality returned with a truly dominant maiden victory at Geelong on May 19 and looks to be a horse going places. The Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr)-trained was forced to travel three wide with no cover up on speed and despite the torrid run managed to put over three lengths on his rivals under hands and heels. Blake Shinn takes the steer from barrier three and if he can land the one-one upon settling, the race could be over within the first 200m of the 1200m event. He looks to have Stakes ability about him and if Immortality brings his best, he should be streaking clear of his rivals late once again.

Next Best at Mornington: Devils Delight

One of our better bets of the day comes up in the opening event on Monday when the Phillip Stokes-trained Devils Delight looks to build on his last start Pakenham maiden success. The two-year-old gelded son of Hellbent managed to lead throughout on that night and put 3.25 lengths on subsequent Elvstroem Classic winner Line ‘Em Up Loui in an arrogant display. That win came on a Soft 7, so we have no doubt he will handle the Heavy going on Monday afternoon and from barrier four, Zac Spain should have no issue in finding the rail and dictating terms throughout. With a repeat effort of his performances at Pakenham and with race fitness on his side, Devils Delight should prove too slick for this lot over 1200m.

Best Value at Mornington: Mystery Moment

Mystery Moment was a smart winner when second-up in a BM70 for fillies and mares at the Mornington 2000m on May 31 and we expect she will repeat that effort on Monday. The four-year-old mare returns to the track and trip and in the same grade against her sex with Wiremu Pinn sticking on board from barrier three. She gets in perfectly at the weights with just 57.5kg on her back following Pinn’s 3kg claim and should gain a perfect run in transit throughout in the moving line. She showed a nice turn of foot to score last time out and at a nice price with online betting sites, we hope Mystery Moment can come out on top once again.

Best Value

Race 4 – Silk #2 Mystery Moment (3)

4yo Mare | T: John Leek (Jnr) | J: Wiremu Pinn (a3) (60.5kg)
