What | Mornington Races |
Where | Mornington Racecourse – 320 Racecourse Rd, Mornington VIC 3931 |
When | Wednesday, December 28, 2022 |
First Race | 1:05pm AEDT |
Racing heads down to the Mornington Racecourse on Wednesday afternoon where a competitive eight-race midweek program is set down for decision. Despite the threat of rain in the afternoon, we expect to be racing on a Good 4 come the opening race and with a bit of luck the rain stays away and have a great day of racing.
The action is set to get underway at 1:05pm AEDT, with the rail in the true position throughout.
Best Bet at Mornington: Fantasising
We do not need to wait too long for our best bet of the day as the Cliff Brown-trained Fantasising steps out in the opening event over 2000m. Having finished second in all four starts prior to her Australian debut, the four-year-old mare returned with a fifth at Mornington over 1500m, so the step up to 2000m second-up looks ideal for the former European galloper. The Pivotal mare will settle at the rear of the field underneath Daniel Stackhouse, but with a genuinely run 10-furlong event expected, the race should be run to her liking. She was hitting the line with great intent first-up after a long spell and with natural improvement and the rise in trip, Fantasising looks a clear best bet of the day.
Best Bet
Race 1 – #9 Fantasising (7)
4yo Mare | T: Cliff Brown | J: Daniel Stackhouse (57.5kg)
Next Best at Mornington: Discerning
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Discerning looks to have plenty of ability and is sure to appreciate a step back in grade when she competes in a BM62 for fillies and mares. The Street Boss filly chased home the likes of Red Card, Dusse and River Ribble at Pakenham on December 3 and arguably wanted something easier than that. She gets that her on Wednesday and based on her win at Bendigo two runs back looks to have plenty of tenacity about her. With plenty of early speed engaged, look for Michael Poy to have her settled off the speed and with a nice turn of foot in clear air, we expect Discerning to skip clear in the penultimate race of the day.
Next Best
Race 7 – #5 Discerning (8)
3yo Filly | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Michael Poy (59kg)
Best Value at Mornington: Toompine
We will be looking to bow out in the last with the Jason Warren-trained Toompine at a nice each-way quote. The four-year-old gelding has been building nicely towards a win this campaign and was the best of the beaten brigade when chasing home Duke Of Neworleans at Kyneton on December 15. From the awkward barrier (nine), look for Beau Mertens to have the War gelding settled close to the speed throughout. He is lightly-raced, but with a similar effort to Kyneton, that should be more than good enough for Toompine to salute in the final race of the day.
Best Value
Race 8 – #8 Toompine (9)
4yo Filly | T: Jason Warren | J: Beau Mertens (59kg)
