What | Moonee Valley Races |
Where | Moonee Valley Racing Club – 2 Feehan Ave, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 |
When | Sunday, March 5, 2023 |
First Race | 1:20pm AEDT |
A rare Sunday meeting is set to greet punters at Moonee Valley this weekend, and there look to be some nice races to sink our teeth into. With warm weather forecast on Sunday afternoon, we expect to start on a Good 4 before an upgrade to a Good 3 early on in the card. With the rail coming out 7m the entire circuit, races could be run to suit those up on pace throughout the card. We kick off the day of action at 1:20pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Pretty Tavi
The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Pretty Tavi was the definition of a good thing beaten at the Moonee Valley 1200m and as she returns to the track and trip, she looks a clear best bet of the day. She was badly held up for a run from a low draw last time out, and despite never really being clear until it was too late, the Tavistock filly was only beaten by a half-length on the line. Blake Shinn hops on board, and with a bit of luck, he will look to get the filly one off the rails in a midfield position. If afforded that luxury, then Pretty Tavi is clearly the best horse in the race and should prove too strong late for her rivals.

Race 2 –
3yo Filly | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Blake Shinn (58kg)
Next Best at Moonee Valley: Skywriter
Having finished second in both of her career starts thus far, Chris Waller’s Skywriter gets her chance at start three when she steps up to the mile. The three-year-old filly has been doing her best work late over 1214m and then 1300m at Sandown, so the 1600m on Sunday should suit her perfectly. With a decently run mile expected, the race looks perfectly set up for Craig Williams to have this girl settled at the rear, build through her gears inside the final 400m and in the home straight can blouse her rivals and finish the best this time round.

Best Value at Moonee Valley: Rambler Rebel
The Michelle Payne-trained Rambler Rebel is a genuine Moonee Valley specialist this campaign, having caused upsets at big prices in tougher races than what he faces on Sunday. The seven-year-old gelding is a genuine leader and from barrier 8, with Celine Gaudray on board claiming 3kg, he gets in well with 60.5kg on his back. We expect the son of Uncle Mo will get an uncontested throughout and as he showed in his wins here in the past, he will make this a genuinely run event throughout. At $19 with online bookmakers, Rambler Rebel will give us a sight at odds and with a bit of luck can hold on late.
