Mixed week for trainer Ben Currie

Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie has had a mixed week training a record number of winners but also losing an appeal against a hefty fine.

Currie became Queensland’s first trainer to win 150 races in a season when Le Beau Renard won at Dalby on Thursday.

He has had 148 winners in Queensland and two in NSW.

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission has released details of an internal review of a $3000 fine imposed on Currie for working some horses at Toowoomba on Good Friday when the track was closed.

It is QRIC policy not to release details of internal reviews until a month after the hearing when the further appeal period has expired.

Currie said stewards had only one witness who wanted to identify his horses as being on the track.

“I can provide my whole staff from that day to state that we did not work any horses. I feel that in itself is more than enough proof. This “witness” and I, have had troubles in the past as well,” Currie said.

He asked the conviction and penalty be set aside.

After reviewing evidence from Currie and several others witnesses the internal reviewer Kane Ashby found it was not in dispute that several horses worked at Toowoomba Turf Club on March 30.

Ashby confirmed the original conviction and $3000 fine.
