Ming Dynasty 2020 betting tips & form guide

Rosehill

Along with the San Domenico Stakes, the 1300m Ming Dynasty is one of two Group 3 races to be run and won at Rosehill Gardens this weekend. Maiden galloper Overlord is the current $2.40 favourite with most online bookmakers, while Kumasi, Aim, Achiever and Holyfield are also in single figures. It looks to be a slowly run affair, with Holyfield likely to show the way from the outside alley and fellow Aquis Farm runner Kumasi also tipped to go forward. Overlord will be in the back half of the field from barrier two.

Best Bet
Kumasi @ $5 Sportsbet

Gerald Ryan can have a good day out if Peltzer wins the San Domenico and Kumasi follows up in the Ming Dynasty. The Snitzel colt has a win, a second and a fourth to his name from three career starts, which is good going considering the company he’s been keeping. At his last start he was beaten over eight lengths by Anders, who will start favourite in the San Domenico, on a bottomed-out track which we don’t think he handled. He won his maiden on a firm deck in February, so the conditions this Saturday should suit. Brenton Avdulla has ridden the colt in all three starts and sticks here. Drawn in barrier six, Kumasi is likely to roll across and park behind the leaders in the box seat before pulling away late.

Next Best
Overlord @ $2.40 Sportsbet

Race favourite Overlord has been seriously stiff not to breakthrough with a maiden win yet. He ran second to Peltzer twice before a last-to-fourth effort behind Rothfire in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins at Eagle Farm. He clocked the best race sectionals on debut when placed third on the Kensington track, then recorded the best last 800m sectional of the day over 1200m at Randwick when beaten under 2L by Peltzer, and then went down 4L to the same horse when starting an even-money favourite. He was no match for Rothfire in the J.J. Atkins but arguably should have finished in the minor money. First up at 1300m we think will suit him, but where he gets to in the run from barrier one is our main concern given he likes to get back and there doesn’t look to be much speed in the race. He’s the one they have to beat, but he is slightly short in this first up.

Best Value
Bazooka @ $8.50 Sportsbet

The value in the race looks to come in the form of David Payne’s Bazooka. Coming off a second placing to North Pacific, the gelding looks to be ready to get into the winner’s stall again. While his last five starts have come on heavy tracks and he hasn’t placed on good going in two runs, we think he will appreciate getting on to drier ground as the form around him on those better tracks has been very good. He’s one of a very few runners in the race who have fitness on their side, and he is drawn well in barrier two for Jason Collett at only 53.5kg. He can settle on the pace from the barrier and be explosive late. We feel Bazooka is about the right price, but he can certainly give this a shake if he brings the North Pacific form to this.
