2020 Lord Stakes betting preview
Sharing the spotlight with the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield this weekend is the Listed Lord Stakes, which is run over 1700m with prize money of $140,000 on offer. The race is one that punters can usually bet on with a lot of confidence, with the last four winners of the Lord Stakes all going around as favourites. The market leader for the 2020 edition looks to be one of the best bets on the Caulfield card on Boxing Day.
We don’t think Mick Price’s Tavidance could have been any more impressive than he was last time out when bolting in by nearly four lengths at Pakenham three weeks ago. He was a well-supported favourite for the 1600m event and looked to be the winner from a long way out. He’s had two starts at Caulfield and posted a victory on his first attempt back in the winter this year. He’s a horse that usually prefers the sting out of the ground, but his last-start victory on a Good 4 shows why he is the market elect for the 2020 Lord Stakes.
Pancho lines up at nice each-way odds following his last-start win in the Listed Kyneton Cup. He actually beat home Tavidance on that occasion, but the runner-up barely saw any daylight and looked to be a good thing beaten. However, Chris Waller’s gelding still had to get the job done, so it is hard not to entertain the price on offer for Pancho this Saturday. He maps to be towards the front of the back and will be fighting out the finish in the Lord Stakes.
We have been a big fan of Coming Around throughout his sustained campaign. His last-start fourth at Flemington left a little to be desired after receiving plenty of favours in the running, so he will need to improve for this assignment. He has chased home the likes of Vungers, Outrageous and Humidor this preparation, and all of those would be right in the market for this. If he gets some some early luck from barrier eight, he can run a big race at odds.
