2020 Christmas Stakes betting preview

The joint-feature event of Saturday’s nine-race card at Caulfield is the Listed Christmas Stakes over 1200m. Seven of the last eight winners have been supported in the market, with only one blowout result a couple of years back in 2017. The 2020 edition has attracted a field of 10 with plenty of proven stars in the mix. The Sydney-based Pandemic has opened up favourite for the Christmas Stakes and looks to be a genuine contender.

Anthony Freedman and Jye McNeil will be hoping that King Of Hastings can continue his near bombproof first-up record with a win on Boxing Day. The now four-year-old is yet to miss the quinella when resuming from a spell and looks well placed to continue that trend in the Christmas Stakes. He has won at Caulfield in the past and has run the quinella six times from seven attempts over 1200m. Having drawn in the middle of the field, he will get a cosy run throughout the race. If he comes to hand quickly this preparation, he should prove hard to beat.

James Cummings will be hoping his four-year-old gelding Pandemic can build on his impressive last-start win at Rosehill and put in a competitive performance at his second-ever run in Melbourne. His only previous start in the Victorian capital was over the same track and distance, where he was beaten by just over half a length to finish fourth in the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes. He’s a galloper who tends to settle towards the back of the field, so if it’s a day for backmarkers to run on and fight out the finish, he will be right in it.

The Mick Price-trained Tavisan looks to be the leader of the Listed Christmas Stakes. With not much early pace engaged, he looks set to get an easy time of it up in front over the six furlongs. Jamie Kah gets back on and will look to make it two wins from three rides aboard the five-year-old gelding. He has a 50% win record when third up and has won at Caulfield in the past, so he must be included in any exotics.
