2021 Light Fingers Stakes preview – Saturday, February 13

Some of Australia’s top three-year-old fillies will contest this weekend’s Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes over 1200m at Royal Randwick. A capacity field has been entered, headed by Away Game and Hungry Heart. There could be an early battle for the speed, with Vangelic, Away Game and Every Rose all on-pacers, while Joviality and Elizabeel will also be handy.

Thermosphere looks to have come back in tremendous order as she showed with an eye-catching third at Rosehill a fortnight ago against the older horses in Benchmark 88 grade over 1200m. She stays at the six furlongs, which will be an advantage given a number of her rivals are coming into this fresh off a lengthy spell. She has drawn wide in gate 11, but Nash Rawiller will no doubt find a good spot with the Exosphere filly. She can be a bit hard to catch at times, but she looks to be in great form, and we are getting a great price about her.

Away Game is as tough as they come for a three-year-old filly and has raced in more states than the rest of these combined, which proves her adaptability. The Maher & Eustace prospect ran a terrific third in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas four weeks ago, which will have given her confidence for this assignment back in Sydney. She drops back to the 1200m, which is a slight query, although she won the Percy Sykes at this track and trip in her two-year-old season. Barrier six should see her very handy under Hugh Bowman, and she will no doubt be in the finish.

Hungry Heart promised the world as a spring three-year-old and delivered an atlas, running second in the Furious, the Tea Rose and the Flight Stakes before being beaten 5.5 lengths in the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. The Frankel filly has won just one of her seven career races, but that did come at this track and trip in her second start. Jumping out of barrier nine under James McDonald, she will settle in the middle of the pack and look to charge home late down the centre of the track.
