Kingston Town Classic 2018: Tips and betting preview

William Pike WA Cup
Star WA hoop William Pike will saddle up Arcadia Queen in Kingston Town Classic.

THE final day of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival is upon us.

The Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) is the headline event of the day but there’s a strong nine race card to round out the Ascot feature Carnival.

Let’s take a look at our expert’s tips.

*All odds were correct at the time of publication and were provided by our trusted online bookmakers

Race 1 – Tourism WA Trophy (1000m)

Rebel Yell has been good this preparation, winning on both occasions.

The horse failed on debut in the opening campaign, but the gelding has returned a different horse and looks hard to beat, even against the well supported commodities Fire And Rain and Market Ruler.

Rebel Yell is at $7.50 via online bookmaker Sportsbet

Race 2 – RS1MW (1000m)

Princess Zelda has been consistent this campaign, scoring a win and a second placing over three runs. After winning at Bunbury two starts back the mare returned to Ascot on November 21 and only missed out by half a length.

This is a step up in class but the price is hard to ignore. From a good barrier Princess Zelda will be right in the winning frame.

Princess Zelda is at $12 with the online bookmakers

Race 3 – BM72+ (1200m)

We’re not jumping off The Nicconian any time soon.

The quality galloper won for us on Group 1 Railway Stakes day, and we’re confident he can do the business once again. There’s a 2kg jump in weights but the hattrick seeker is good enough to get the job done for a quality gate.

The Nicconian is at $5 to win this benchmark 72+ contest

Race 4 – BM66+ (1500m)

White-hot gelding Royal Statue will be extremely hard to beat in this event. After failing in his opening two races the Adam Durrant-trained gelding has gone on to record four-straight victories, three of which were at Ascot.

With Willie Pike on board Royal Statue looks like the best bet of the day.

Royal Statue is at $2.60 at online bookmaker BetEasy

Race 5 – Sir Ernest Lee-Steere (1400m)

The Velvet King was disappointing when he finished fifth in the WA Guineas, but before that the gelding recorded a slashing win in the Fairetha Stakes at this track on November 10.

The drop back to 1400m will be beneficial, as will the previous victory in his last third-up attempt. Don’t worry about the slight rise in weight since the Fairetha, he can handle it.

The Velvet King is at $2.80 via BetEasy

BEST ONLINE BOOKMAKERS FOR HORSE RACING

Race 6 – Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m)

Pearls And Prawns has won five of her eight starts to date, despite a failure last start as a favourite.

The horse draws perfectly here – as opposed to the barrier 10 draw in that ninth placed finish – and we think the wheel turns for the promosing four-year-old mare.

Pearls And Prawns is at $4 via online bookmaker Ladbrokes

Race 7 – Towton Cup (2200m)

Mississippi Delta did the business for us on the opening day of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival and looks the galloper to beat here.

Mississippi Delta won brilliantly by two lengths on November 24 under Pike, who steered the gun prospect to an extremely impressive win.

Willie Pike again takes the ride, and even with a 2kg weight rise Mississippi Delta should again deliver a strong performance.

Mississippi Delta is at $2.15 to win with the online bookmakers

Race 8 – Kingston Town Classic (1800m)

Arcadia Queen is going to be hard to beat in the main event of the day, the Kingston Town Classic.

The draw is perfect, Pike is aboard, there’s a 7kg weight relief on the next-best horse Galaxy Star and the WA Guineas lead in form is strong.

Everything points towards Pike doing the business once again as the Queen goes on to win the Kingston.

Arcadia Queen is at $2.60 with Sportsbet to win the Kingston Town Classic

Race 9 – BM72+ (1800m)

In-form runner Dark Prospect has won three races this campaign, including a win this track and distance last start.

The horse jumps in class but drops 1kg which is key here. With the good draw compared to some of the key runners in the field Dark Prospect should prove hard to beat.

Dark Prospect is at $4.60 to win race 9 at Ascot
