What Randwick-Kensington Races
Where Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
When Wednesday, March 8, 2023
First Race 1:45pm AEDT

We’re racing on the Kensington circuit at Randwick on Wednesday afternoon with a competitive eight-race program kicking off at 1:45pm. We should have picturesque conditions for race-day, with no rain expected in the lead-up and the track currently listed as a Soft 5. That is expected to be a Good 4 come Wednesday, and with the rail in the true position the entire circuit, we should be in for a nice day of racing.

Best Bet: Kokoro

Kokoro has resumed in terrific order this preparation and looks to find a nice target for his second win this time in. This son of Real Impact won first-up in impressive fashion on the Kensington circuit over the 1400m on February 2, getting home by just under a length. He got a mid-field sit in transit before powering over the top of his rivals to score dominantly, despite what the short margin may suggest. He then ran second in behind Lindermann at Rosehill on February 18, which looks great form given that horse has since placed in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas. The step up to the 1550m looks ideal, and with Brenton Avdulla electing to stick with this John O’Shea-trained gelding, it gives us great confidence heading into this very winnable BM78 contest. If he can find the one-one, he looks the clear horse to beat in this field.

Next Best: Captain Amelia

The third race on the program presents plenty of first-up fillies in maiden company, but we’ve been taken with Captain Amelia’s single barrier trial. This Dundeel filly ran fifth of seven in a trial at Hawkesbury on February 21, but don’t let that position fool you – it was much more impressive than that. Jockey James McDonald had her last turning for home in the jump-out, and when asked for a minor effort she bolted up to her opposition. If you can watch the trial back, take a look at her work through the winning post; 50m after the line, Captain Amelia is in front of them all and does it under her own steam. She may not be fully wound up for this, but she must be a bet in this field of unknown quantities. McDonald should be finding some cover mid-race, and with plenty of speed on the map here, we can see Captain Amelia storming over the top of them all late to break her maiden on debut.

Best Value: Built

Trainer Chris Waller has six of the eight runners engaged for the opener on Wednesday afternoon, but we think the pick of the lot is Built. He’s a long-standing maiden now with seven career starts for just two minor placings to his name; however, he hasn’t been disgraced, and you can easily make the argument he’s run into some quality opposition in the past. He is first-up after a 17-week break, and while his barrier trials may not read well, to the naked eye it appears he’s done more than enough to be in this race up to his ears. His latest trial saw him race close to quality benchmark gallopers like Vreneli and Tamerlane, so don’t be discouraged by the margin of five lengths. He finished his last preparation nicely, and although this son of I Am Invincible didn’t get his win, he can make up for that on Wednesday afternoon.
