The Group 3 JRA Plate has attracted 11 runners on Saturday in the fourth race at Royal Randwick. Run over 2000m for $160,000, it is fair to say this field isn’t one for the ages. Zaaki is the $2.50 favourite with racing bookies ahead of Entente, who looks to be the likely leader in the race along with Wu Gok. Zaaki will be midfield in the run.

We wanted to find ways to be around this favourite and find some value in the race, but it really came down to one question: which of these horses could have run as well as Zaaki did in the Doncaster Mile from barrier 19? The answer? None, so he goes on top. The import had his first Australian start in the mile feature a fortnight ago for Annabel Neasham. After jumping from barrier 19, experiencing some interference in the straight, he managed to reel off the best final 200m sectional of the day and was going past runners after the post to suggest the extra 400m will be ideal. He has drawn perfectly in barrier five to stalk the leaders and while he does rise 5.5kg from the handicap conditions of the Doncaster back to a Group 3, that is compensated by James McDonald. He’s probably the best of the day against these B-Graders.

Entente is racing well this campaign with a win in the Albury Cup two starts back, before running into Shared Ambition in the Neville Selwood Stakes on April 3. He has had three weeks between runs which will have freshened him up nicely, and he looks to be the race leader that Zaaki is going to have to catch. If he has to work too hard early from barrier eight, it could spell trouble for the four-year-old Dundeel gelding though.

Mike Moroney’s Hang Man is flying this time in and is looking for three in a row on Saturday after wins in the Yarra Valley Cup and Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield over 2000m. The seven-year-old gelding is a superior dry track runner, so the Good 4 conditions on Saturday will be ideal for him. Drawn out in the outside alley, Glen Boss will likely send the son of Windsor Knot back to near last and if the speed isn’t too solid it might make it hard to win. He is the each-way play in the race, however.
