HorseBetting brings you an in-depth preview of Ipswich Turf Club’s marquee meeting this Saturday, including top tips and quaddie picks for the nine-race card as well as best bets for the Ipswich Cup, Eye Liner Stakes and Gai Waterhouse Classic. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is out 0.5m throughout, so it should play fairly evenly all day. The first race is set to jump at 11:38am and the three Listed races conclude the program, with the Ipswich Cup the first of those at 3:17pm.

Ipswich Cup Best Bet: Inverloch

Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young bring north their seasoned gelding in a bid to win another Cup. A winner of the Wagga Cup two starts back, Iverloch has been allocated the top weight with Larry Cassidy in the saddle in what could be a winning recipe. Drawn in the middle of the pack in gate eight, the seven-year-old will be sent forward and should be hard to catch around the tight track. His disappointing 12th at Rosehill last start can be forgiven, as the 2400m might have been just a stretch too far, so back to 2150m looks to have him right in this. We are happy to back Inverloch and Flash Aah both on an each-way basis.

Eye Liner Stakes Best Bet: Axe

It may seem strange that we are taking a set against Amish Boy in a Listed race given we gave him a chance in last weekend’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap if he had have gained a start, but with 58kg here, we want to shop around the favourite. Michael Costa’s Axe was also a touch too far down the ballot in the Stradbroke, but he gets in here with 54kg and is racing in brilliant form. The stable is flying at the minute, with seven wins from 11 starters in June alone, and we are confident the run of luck can continue into Saturday’s Ipswich feature. The four-year-old son of Written Tycoon has not been outside the trifecta in his past five runs, with his last-start third at Group 3 level coming only a tenth of a length off subsequent Stradbroke winner Tofane. The wide gate is the only knock.

Gai Waterhouse Classic Best Bet: Boomtown Lass

Chris Anderson and James Orman combine in the last race of the day with Boomtown Lass. The 1200m Fillies & Mares feature sees a quality field assembled, and with a number of the main chances drawn poorly, Boomtown Lass gets her chance from barrier one. After finishing second to the in-form Usmanov first-up over 1000m, this Spirit Of Boom mare will improve second-up at the 1200m on a track where she is very consistent. In a race that we aren’t overly keen to play in, this five-year-old mare looks the one we want to be with.

Gai Waterhouse Classic TipRace 9 – Boomtown Lass (#2) $4.50 with Sportsbet

Ipswich Best Bet: Palladas

Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney join forces in the T.L. Cooney 3YO Plate with Palladas, a consistent son of I Am Invincible who was only half a length off gaining a start in the Stradbroke Handicap when fourth in the Fred Best Classic. Sent around as a $71 chance that day, the three-year-old flashed home to finish fourth on the heels of Apache Chase, Ayrton and Amish Boy, which is great form for this race. Palladas romped in to break his maiden at this course in October last year over the 1350m, which is what he is dealt with here, and is drawn beautifully in barrier two. At set weights, he looks near enough to a good thing.

Best BetRace 5 – Palladas (#8) $3.20 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Ipswich: Desert Lord

This is one galloper we thought we would have seen earlier in the carnival with some Group 1 events in mind, but instead the David Vandyke-trained Desert Lord will kick off his campaign in a Class 6 at Ipswich. Formerly trained down south in the Hawkes camp, this six-year-old son of High Chaparral has plenty of class, as we saw when he finished only five lengths off Kolding in the 2019 Epsom Handicap. His last start saw him flash home into second at Doomben over the 1350m journey before he was tipped out, and he recently returned to the track with a soft trial at the Sunshine Coast. This race sets up perfectly for Desert Lord first-up.

Next BestRace 6 – Desert Lord (#3) $2.30 with Sportsbet

Ipswich Value Bet: Minto’s Paradise

Two-year-old colt Minto’s Paradise has had just the three career starts for a win, a second, and a ninth when thrown in the deep end at Listed level last start. On debut, the son of Benfica was beaten comfortably by the talented Maotai at this track over 1100m, but he chased hard late, before going on to win comfortably on the Gold Coast on May 15th on a Heavy 8. Les Kelly then elected to run this colt in The Phoenix at Eagle Farm over 1500m, which was a stretch too far, as he led the field up before fading to finish 11 lengths of Volcanic Rock. Drawn in barrier two with Noel Callow in the saddle, this colt can bounce back to form over the 1350m in a much weaker 2YO Handicap. He should make the running and be hard to catch in the opener.

Best ValueRace 1 – Minto’s Paradise (#3) $15 with Sportsbet
