What Tasmanian Derby Day
Where Elwick Racecourse – 6 Goodwood Rd, Glenorchy TAS 7010
When Friday, February 10, 2023
First Race 3:17pm AEDT

One of the biggest race days on the Tasmanian Racing calendar greets punters on Friday, with an eight-race program scheduled for Elwick Racecourse. Headlined by three black-type events, the track at Hobart has comes up a Soft 5, whilst the rail sticks to the true position throughout the entire circuit. We kick off the day of racing in the Apple Isle at 3:17pm AEDT.

Bow Mistress Top Tip – Queenborough Flyer

The Group 3 Bow Mistress is the featured event at Hobart on Friday afternoon and having won three of her first four runs this time in, we’re hoping Sigrid Carr can lift her mare Queenborough Flyer to another victory. The four-year-old mare managed to get the better of some of her rivals who she meets on Friday in the Lady Lynette over 1100m here at Hobart when unleashing a strong turn of foot in the home straight. Outside of Dance To Dubai who brings strong Melbourne metro form, this looks well within Queenborough Flyer’s grasp. She will be giving the favourite a start in the race, but if Siggy Carr can have this girl settled in the moving line around midfield, she showed last time out that her turn of foot is more than capable of claiming a race like this. With a bit of luck she will be the one swooping on some potentially vulnerable leaders and bring up a rare win for Tasmanian trainers in this event.

Tasmanian Derby Top Tip – Cable Dancer

The $1.28 being bet about Dunkel in the Listed Tasmanian Derby is one we are willing to swerve and instead side with the Charlotte Littlefield-trained Cable Dancer. The three-year-old gelding has been progressing nicely in weaker grade in Victoria to what he meets here, but in a race that is wide open outside of the favourite. He looks to be a free-flowing galloper and is sure to appreciate the fact he will be the only known leader in the Derby and with one of the best front-running jockeys in Jordan Childs booked, he will be given every chance. If Childs can make this a dash for home after a couple of cheap sectionals, we’re hopeful that is enough to get the better of Dunkel and at $10 with online bookmakers, looks a great bet in the Tasmanian Derby.

Strutt Stakes Top Tip – Just A Needs

The first of the three black-type events on the card is the Listed Strutt Stakes over 2100m for the three-year-old fillies. Despite the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Soul Choice coming up a $1.60 with online betting sites, we are opting to side with the Imogen Miller-trained Just A Needs. Having saluted in smart style in the Thousand Guineas, this Needs Further filly simply needs just that, further. The step up to 2100m this deep into a campaign looks ideal and despite generally being a backmarker, the small field of five should suit her down to the ground. Soul Choice will look to make this a genuinely run 2100m event but armed with a strong turn of foot and experience at the track, Just A Needs looks hard to go past in what looks to be a two-horse affair.

Best Bet at Hobart – Muscle Up

Adam Trinder’s Muscle Up bought up a deserving maiden victory at Launceston on January 27 and looks primed to go on with the job when he steps out in this three-year-old event under handicap conditions. The Zululand gelding put over two-lengths on his rivals in a dominant showing last time out when gaining a perfect run in transit where he was then able to unleash a strong sprint in the home straight. With a similar run expected from barrier three, look for Brendon McCoul to have this bloke building through his gears approaching the home turn and when asked for an effort, put his rivals away with relative ease once again.
