What Happy Valley Races
Where Happy Valley Racecourse – Wong Nai Chung Rd, Happy Valley, Hong Kong
When Wednesday, March 1, 2023
First Race 6:45pm HKT (9:45pm AEDT)

Hong Kong racing heads to Happy Valley Racecourse on Wednesday evening for a nine-race program under lights. It comes after an amazing Sunday afternoon as Golden Sixty proved too good for Romantic Warrior in the Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup.

The rail is back in the A position for the entire circuit on Wednesday night, and with a very low chance of rain throughout the week, we should be racing on a Good to Firm surface. The competitive program is set to get underway from 6:45pm HKT (9:45pm AEDT).

Best Bet: A Americ Te Specso

We’ve had plenty of time for A Americ Te Specso and this looks like his best chance to break his maiden status yet. The Per Incanto gelding got caught up behind gallopers and had no room on February 15 behind Son Pak Fu and was still able to finish within two lengths in fourth position. We think with some clear running he would have finished much closer to the eventual winner, and now from barrier two with Zac Purton on board we’ll see if he can get redemption. Purton comes off riding a treble at Sha Tin and should be just in behind the speed, peeling off the leaders turning for home. Our boy will get the perfect run, and if he doesn’t close off to be right in the finish here, we’d be shocked.

Next Bet: Howdeepisyourlove

We really like the progression of Howdeepisyourlove this preparation and he looks ready to find his second career win on Wednesday night. We have to wait for the finale at Happy Valley for him to step out, but it should be worth the wait. He won empathetically in Class 4 three starts back and has been placed twice in Class 3 since. His latest effort in behind Here Comes Ted was the eye-catching run of the evening on February 1 as he was forced to the rear from a wide gate. Jockey Karis Teetan had no choice to do that from barrier 12 and proceeded to storm home down the middle of the track, just running out of time. This time, the son of Deep Field should be no worse than midfield, and if he does get into a stalk position, he’s the one to beat despite this being a very competitive Class 3 to finish the Happy Valley program.

Next Best Again: Seasons Wit

Seasons Wit has caught our eye at the barrier trials since arriving in Hong Kong and we’re happy to side with this son of Capitalist for a few reasons. He’s first-up from Australia and is yet to miss the frame in his five career starts. He’s had three jump-outs in Hong Kong for trainer Jamie Richards and has shown plenty of versatility on both the Sha Tin turf and all-weather surfaces. The fact Zac Purton has elected to side with this three-year-old gelding is another major factor, as he could have easily hopped back aboard Gorgeous Vitality, who also accepts for this Class 3 affair. He draws to get the one-one on a very hot tempo and should be able to challenge his rivals with the low weight to boot. It’s a tough first-up assignment, but he’s got plenty of ticks on his side heading into this.

Best Value: Hk Dragon

We’ve got to respect Hk Dragon. He’s first-up since October 2022 and looks to have trialled up nicely winning on the Conghua track before another nice hit-out on the Sha Tin all-weather. He drew nothing but horrid barriers towards the end of his preparation and now, finally, can show his electric best with a good draw in gate six. He does have a tendency to miss the kick and he can’t afford to be doing that here, but at his peak, he can find the frame at a good each-way price with online bookmakers. Lyle Hewitson for Douglas Whyte is a combination worth following and we think they’ll find the money early in the card.
