Group 1 tips for Day one of The Championships

THE time has finally arrived, day one of The Championships is upon us.

There’s more quality racing on one day than some metropolitan tracks see all year, headlined by the four Group 1 races. Each G1 event has highly competitive fields and will be a punter’s nightmare.

That won’t be the case however if you choose to use our tips. Below we’ve selected our best bets for the four features on day one of The Championships.

Sires’ Produce Stakes – Oohood

Oohood is without question the best maiden in the country, possibly in the world. After placing in the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Golden Slipper in back-to-back events, few could argue.

The I Am Invincible filly looks set to relish the 1400m trip and the form lines cannot be faulted. This should be the horse’s first-ever win.

Oohood is a $3.40 hope at Ladbrokes to win the Sires’ Produce Stakes

Australian Derby – Ace High

Ace High
Ace High scored its first group one success when holding out Tangled in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick.

Ace High looks ready to peak in the Derby. After a strong performance in the Guineas last start despite covering additional ground, punters can back the David Payne runner with confidence. The colt has plenty of star power, registering a Victoria Derby win last spring.

From the perfect gate there should be no excuses for Ace High.

Ace High is a $5 hope in the Australian Derby at Sportsbet

TJ Smith Stakes – Redzel

McEvoy and Redzel win The Everest
Redzel returns a champion in the Darley Classic.

Redzel should rubber stamp its credentials as the best sprinter in the land with a TJ Smith Stakes win. After a shock second placing in the Lightning Stakes the Everest winner bounced back smartly to win the Challenge Stakes with ease.

The five-year-old trailed beautifully in Sydney leading into this one and we’re confident that Redzel adds another G1 title to his already impressive resume.

Redzel is the $2.40 favourite at Neds to win the TJ Smith Stakes

Doncaster Mile – Humidor

Humidor
Darren Weir has Humidor in great shape.

We’ve already covered why we think Humidor will take out the feature on day one of The Championships, but it doesn’t hurt to go over the facts.

Humidor gets a great gate, has G1 form in the bank and gets the blinkers added following a strong win at Flemington in the Blamey Stakes.

Just get on.

Humidor is a $9 hope in the Doncaster Mile at William Hill
